The first emoticon was used While many people credit Kevin MacKenzie with the invention of
the emoticon in 1979, it was Scott Fahlman in 1982 who proposed using :-) after a joke, rather than the original -) proposed by
MacKenzie. -
The first Domain Name Servers (DNS) was created. The domain name system
was important in that it made addresses on the Internet more human-friendly compared to its numerical IP address counterparts.
DNS servers allowed Internet users to type in an easy-to-remember domain name and then converted it to the IP address
automatically. -
The code for the World Wide Web was written by Tim Berners-Lee, based on his
proposal from the year before, along with the standards for HTML, HTTP, and URLs. -

and, much like the first email explained what email was, its purpose was to explain what the World Wide Web was. -

NCR Cooperation and AT&T Coorperation created the WaveLAN, which was originally supposed to be used for cashier systems. -

The Internet Underground Music Archive (IUMA) was started by Rob Lord, Jeff Patterson and Jon Luini from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1993. This was the first time people could legally download music on the internet. -
ESPN
ESPN created an online website (called ESPNet.SportsZone.com at the time) to go along with their popular television station (created in 1979). This website gives imformation about sporting events and is presently called espn.go.com. -
Internet Phone
The AT&T PocketNet Phone was the first cell phone that allowed internet access. However, this was a prototype phone and never actually shipped to the general market. -
Google
One of the most well known search engines was created by Larry Page and Sergy Brin. -
Skype
Skype was a way for people to communicate face to face via the internet without actually being with each other. Each person is on one end of a camera and they can see each other's faces. -
Facebook
Facebook, a very popular social network was created by Mark Zuckerberg along with his college roomates and classmates, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. -
Twitter
A social network designed to send out 140 character messages called 'tweets' was created by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass. -
iPhone
On Jan. 9th, 2007, Steve Jobs announced that there will be an iPhone coming out. On June 29th, 2007, the first ever iPhone was released to the public. This is a cellphone, computer, arcade, and mp3 player all in one! -
