  • Arthur Phillip is born

    Arthur Phillip was born in Allhallows (London), England and trained from an early age to become a seaman.
  • Governor Phillip's thoughts on slavery

    Governor Phillip wrote :
    "there can be no slavery in a free land, and consequently no slaves". This told us that Governor Phillip had a good heart and tried very hard to give the early settlers their best chance to survive and create a society that was fair to all.

    Governor Phillip Leader of the First Settlers

    Governor Phillip had to work with all the early settlers and the local Aboriginals to keep everyone safe, construct buildings, create farms and ideally free convicts who had behaved well. He tried very hard to have good relationships with the Aboriginals.
  • Sydney Cove here we come!

    Governor Arthur Phillip found Botany Bay to be unsuitable so after exploring the area he moved the First Fleet to Sydney Cove which was where the Union Jack was raised and all the travellers were finally able to come ashore.
  • Marines hung for stealing

    Governor Phillip had to have 6 marines hung for stealing food. It was not popular with his staff but he insisted that all men and women (whether they were free or not) be given the same rations and the same punishment if they committed a crime. Effect
    Under Governor Phillip the people began to realise that they were equal and that no-one was more special than anyone else. The convicts would have felt hope that they could one day have normal lives and wouldn't always be treated badly.

    Governor Phillip's health was going downhill because of poor diet and the stress of his job. He went back to England, taking the aboriginal Bennelong along with him. Governor Phillip worked hard to have good relationships with the Aboriginals and taught Bennelong English. Bennelong returned to Australia in 1795.
  • NSW too expensive for Great Britain!

    Nearly 5,000 white people live in New South Wales now. Most of these people are still being supported by the government with handouts of food and clothing. Effect:
    England is getting impatient with how expensive New South Wales is to run and that they are not getting any income or other benefits from it.
  • Not enough women

    For every 20 men there was one woman. This is a very awkward and unusual situation for these convicts. Effect:
    This affected making families because men couldn't settle down easily with a wife. More women are needed in the community.
  • Arthur Phillip dies.

    Arther Phillip was known to be a good, loyal, firm but fair man and he tried not to get in the Aboriginals' way. He died as a 76 year old. He had just been promoted to Admiral of the Blue.
  • Macquarie has difficulties with the aboriginals

    Macquarie wanted the natives to behave so he sent the military in to see if they could fix the situation. Effect:
    This made the relationship between the settlers and the aboriginals much worse than it already was. It also showed the British had no respect for the natives.
  • More independence needed

    The British government wants New South Wales to be more independant so they decided not to give new settlers any food or clothes. To be a settler you now need to have your own money. Effect:
    This will encourage wealthy people (and people who can start their own businesses) to come to New South Wales.
  • Money for Religion

    Governor Bourke decided to give money to diffrent religions based on how many people followed the religion. People could choose the religion they wanted to follow. Effect: Lots of religions did well and people had freedom to choose the religion they wanted.
  • End of Convict Transportation

    England stopped sending convicts to mainland Australia, however they continued being transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). Effect: The population went from mostly convicts to a wide range of diffrent people with diffrent skills and talents.
  • Gold is found

    In 1851 there was an amazing discovery of gold near bathurst in New South Whales and Ballerat in Victoria. Effect:
    Lots of people moved to Australia because there was a new way of living and lots of new towns were established.
  • First long railway line!!!

    A new rail-way line letting trains travel long distences was opened in melbourn. Effect:
    this is the time people could travel long distences by train and the start of a national train service.
  • school time

    A new law is pasted in Victoria saying all children six or over must go to school. Effect:
    Lots of children can now get an education and go to school also this this is the start of the Australian education system.
  • Dame Melba the amazing

    In 1887 Dame Melba sings opera in Europe for the first time. She will become the most famous Australian in the world. Effect:
    Australia has more to offer then just a place to send convicts. We are showing that there is modern culture here in Australia.
  • Woman have the right!!!

    In 1894 in New South Whales woman have the right to vote and to stand for parliment. This is the WORLD'S first time ever!!! Effect:
    Women now have more right and are respected in society.
