At Ophir in NSW there was gold found and that is how the goldrush started. Diggers from all over the world came to try and get gold.

This was when the goldrush started. People came from all over the world just to find gold.

Gold at Ballarat

Aug 4, 1851

T.Hiscock found gold at Ballarat and was one of the first to find gold.

Edward Hargraves

Oct 7, 1851

Edward Hargraves was the first person to find gold specks in NSW.

Troopers

Mar 7, 1852

This was when the troopers came into the goldfields. They collected money from diggers who pretended they had a licence and they got money when the diggers bought licences.

Chinese diggers

Jun 5, 1853

This is when the Chinese came to Australia. They were not welcome so each time they came to Australia they had to pay a tax. They also had to walk for 4 weeks just to get to the goldfields.

James Scottie Scoby

Oct 9, 1854

James Scottie Scoby was drunk late at night. He wanted Mr Bently to open his bar so he could have more drinks, but he started smashing windows so Mr Bently hit him with a shovel and he lay there to die.

Eureka stockade

Nov 29, 1854

The diggers refused to pay for a licence because some couldn't aford it and the troopers asked to see it too often. Lots of angry diggers held meetings to try and get rid of the licenses. The diggers at Ballarat built a fort and were ready to fight.

The fight

Dec 3, 1854

This was the day of the fight between the soliders and troopers vs the diggers. The fight lasted only 20 minuets and 25 diggers were killed and so were 5 soliders.

Welcome nugget

Jun 15, 1858

22 miners found the Welcome Nugget in Melbourne- Redhill mining. It wieghed 68.98kg.
