This is when Australia first thought of being its own country. people thought that they were being a copy of england. Another reason Australia wanted to become its own country was because the Australians had to pay a tax every time they crossed the boarder. If they didn't have their own army and air force someone could attack and they would have to wait for the england army to get there to fight. they wanted australia to only be white

Australia realised they needed a flag. They thought up a compitition for "the best designed flag" and some creative people entered. some smart person came up with the design we have today on our flag.

there was six colonies in australia, colonies are what states used to be. the main laws in the colonies were made by the british parlament.

they needed to get the message through to everyone. the real work needed to start. soon but how would they get the message through to everyone.

Everyone started working on all the things that made the word started to get around to people about federation. buildings were built, the flag was created and everything had to be sorted out with the government, so everyone was buisy

each colony had its own set of laws and its own defence force. they were all different and had different just about everything the one thing they all had in common was that none of them wanted black people in their country.

this is when australia elected their own government. the big decisions were still made in britain. Britain was where they were still part of at this stage, they wern't yet their own country.

almost everyone had found out about federation and they thought it was a pretty awesome idea.

they held a meeting to discuss federation. each colony sent 7 people. they started to write down the rules of how the nations parlament will work.

everyone decided they definately wanted federation to happenexcept western australia and Queensland. thse two countries didn't think that federation was the best idea.

People's attention spans grew away from australian federation and they had a vote on whether they wanted to have federation after all. the smaller colonies were worried that the bigger colonies would get a bigger say on whether they wanted federation or not.they decided to keep going with the Federation

thy got a note signed by queen victoria saying they were definately going to become one country. everyone was excited. all the colonies became states to commonwealth australia.

meanwhile, there was a gold rush in Western Australia and the Western Australians started to change their minds about Federation. a few months later they voted towards Federation.

everything was finished and everyone was proud. they had all worked hard and they got a lot out of it. australia was now its own country! everything had been worked out and made. all there was left to do was to open everything up.

People decided to put in a new commonwealth parlament called the old parlament house. They put it in Canberra.
