One of the most famous duels in the Arkansas Territory. It was a political duel between Robert Crittenden and Henry Conway. Conway called Crittenden a liar so he challenged him to a duel. Conway was shot and died two weeks later.

The Compromise of 1850 suggested four possible acts: allow California to enter the Union as a slave-free state, discontinue the slave trade in the nation's capital, let the new western territories decide the question of slavery for themselves, or to strengthen the fugitive slave act.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act suggested that the Louisiana Purchase lands be divided into the Kansas and Nebraska territories. It also said that the new territories should be able to make their own decision about slavery.
