    Videla took measures to restore economic growth. His changes were somewhat successful. He gained international criticism after all the arrests and executions of journalists, educators and intellectuals. More were thought to have been killed, tortured, and put in prison.

    Jorge Rafael Videla retired in 1981. Argentina returned to civilian rule in December 1983.

    Jorge Rafael Videla was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison in 1985. He was also charged with abduction and place under house arrest in 1988.
