APUSH: Chapter 9

  • Jacksonian Democracy

    -spoils system (drain the swamp)
    -champion of the common man (not part of traditional elite)
    -anti-intellectual
    -promised to destroy the bank (benefited speculators hurt the common people)
    -favored internal improvements but thought they should be state driven (vetoed Maysville Road Bill bc entirely in Kentucky)
    -pursued policy of removing indians from path of white settlement
  • Cherokee Nation vs. Georgia, Worcester vs. Georgia

    1) Cherokee not a foreign nation so can't sue in federal court
    2) Georgia can't control the Cherokee or their territory but the U.S. can
  • Nullification Crisis

    SC passed an ordinance of nullification (regarding the tariff of abominations) and voted to authorize raising an army. Jackson made military preparations of his own and said that disunion by armed force was treason. SC repealed the ordinance
  • Democrats vs. Whigs

    1) state vs. federal gov
    2) whigs (mostly nationalists and industrialists) disapproved of the anti-intellectual agenda
    3) whigs favored tariff and national bank to protect industry
  • Van Buren as President (1836)

    Martin Van Buren--Jackson's hand picked successor--is elected.
    -fought US bank but opposed irresponsible state banks
    -liked internal improvements (by the states)
    -general economic depression caused by falling cotton prices but MVB refused to take any responsibility for the general welfare
  • Treasury Act

    MVB wanted somewhere besides state banks to keep federal revenue so called for construction of government-owned vaults
  • Election of 1840

    Whigs nominate popular general William Henry Harrison. Praise the common man. Contrast him to suave Van Buren. He's elected but dies and VP tyler succeeds him
