Edward Marshall was the name of the runner who actually did the deed. He covered 70 miles resuliting in 1,200,000 acre gain. Unsurprisingly this swindle damaged relations with the natives.     Fred Scott
    Fred Scott was a slave who sued that said that when he was living in Illinois which was a free state he wasn't a slave. This made its way to the Supreme Court 1857 ruled by Roger B. Taney said that Scott was still a slave. Blacks were inferior and no rights must be reduced to slavery for his own benefit.

    In cooperation with Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s offensive against Vicksburg, Union Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks’s army moved against the Confederate stronghold at Port Hudson on the Mississippi River. On May 27, after their frontal assaults were repulsed, the Federals settled into a siege which lasted for 48 days. Banks renewed his assaults on June 14 but the defenders successfully repelled them. On July 9, 1863, after hearing of the fall of Vicksburg, the Confederate garrison of Port Hudson.
