The British wanted to build a road westward from Halifax to Qubec as a defensive precaution against Americans, but the route ran through the disputed territory of Maine. Violent fights rose uo and both sides called local militia. these altercations had the threat of becoming a full scale shooting war. -

United States annexes Texas
President Tyler arranged for this annexation by a joint resolution.This required a majority in both houses of Congress, after a debate their solution passed and Texas became the 28th star on the US flag.Mexico felt the loss of their land was unfair. -
United States settles Oregon dispute with Britian
Britian had strong claims to Oregon based souly on prior exploration occupation, discovery and treaty rights. Specifically their Hudson Bay Company that gained proft through trade with the natives.Americans also were able to point to exploration and occupation.A scheme joint occupation was adopted pending future settlement.
