    Anthony Johnson (Introduction) Part 1
In early Virginia,Africans were coming in steadily. Not as slaves, but as indentured servants. If ,like Anthony Johnson, you got bapitised then you were freed after 20 years. There were also English indentured servants. Englished indentured servants were servants for seven to nine years. Anthony Johnson was bapitised and freed and has a wife and his two sons. There was much pragress for Anthony Johnson, but much diminishing progress for Anthony's sons and the rest of the the Africans in Colonial

  • Anthony Johnson Acquires Land

    Anthony Johnson Acquires Land
This event shows progress because not only is Anthony acquring land, which could make his living, but it also proves that he has been freed from slavery because slaves could not own land. This land could be the distinction between life and death for Anthony and his family. So to have land is a great jump foward.
  • Anthony Johnson Petitions For His Slaves

Anthony Johnson Petitions For His Slaves
This event shows progress because it is an African going to court against a white man and winning. Anthony took this chance because slaves were very important for work on his land. Nowadays we think of slavery as the worst thing. But then slavery was the usual. To lose a slave puts out a certain reputation. But winning in this court proves, if just a little, that Africans can stand for themselves.
  • Act III - Baptism Does Not Free Slaves

Act III - Baptism Does Not Free Slaves
~ This act says that if you are a slaves and you get bapitised you are not excempt from bondage~ Up until this point, if a slave got bapitised then they would not be in bondage for life. This shows diminishing progress because even though Anthony is already free his children and grandchildren will be effected by this law. This makes slavery very hard because now you have no option except to be in bondage for life.

  • Act I - The Casual Killing of Slaves

Act I - The Casual Killing of Slaves
~The law says that if you are punishing your slaves and they happen to die then it is not considered murder.~ This law is awful because the englishmen know that slave ownwers can lie and say that they were punishing their slaves.
  • Act XXII - Real Estate

    Act XXII - Real Estate
~ This law says that slaves are hereby considered real estate~
It was implied before but now it is official. It will be very hard on slaves and freed Africans. It proves that at these times, it proves
that Englishmen have all the power.
  • Conclusion of Diminishing Progress

    Conclusion of Diminishing Progress
Although Anthony Johnson made good progreess for him and his family, later there was so much diminishing progress countering it. The Englishmen took control over the Africans by passing all of these laws and made it difficult to survive on there own. If laws were passed to exclude one group of people away from you, what would you do? And what would you say if you were part of that group?
