    Theme

There is always a light in the darkness.
  • Anne's 13th Birthday

Anne had her last birthday party outside of the Annex. She received her diary as a birthday present from her parents. This event was a character development event. It was the beginning of the diary of Anne Frank. It related to the theme because it showed how even in the darkest times, there is hope. In this event, the diary and her party was the light in her darkness.
  • Margot receives her call up call

Margot received her call up call to go to a labor camp in Germany. The Franks decided to go into hiding the day after to protect Margot. This was a turning point to the story. Margot's call up call turned the Frank's lives upside down. This relates to the theme because this event added to the darkness in the plot.
  • Secret Annex

The Franks go into hiding at Mr. Frank's office. Mr. Frank's coworkers who have been informed of their arrival welcomed them. They enter the bookcase that they will not be able to escape for the next 2 years. This event was another turning point in the story. The Franks would never go back to their daily routine of living their lives before the war. This related to the theme of the story because the people who offered to help the Franks hide in the Annex was their light in the darkness.
  • Van Daans

The Van Daans joined the Frank family in the Secret Annex about 1 week later. Anne, Margot, and Mrs. Frank meet the Van Daans. This was a turning point because the Van Daans would be the people that the Franks would have to live with for the next 2 years. They had to adjust to living with other people. And this is also related to the theme because the Franks were the light to the Van Daans’ darkness. They were provided with a place to hide and keep their lives.
  • Mr. Dussel joins the Secret Annex

Mr. Dussel, a friend of Miep and Mr. Frank joined the other 7 people in the Secret Annex. Mr. Dussel was a doctor, which would be useful in the Annex. He shared a room with Anne. This was also a turning point to the story. This was a turning point because Mr. Dussel was a new addition to the Annex; and just like the Van Daans, he will cause trouble, as well as joy. This relates to the theme because Mr. Dussel was a light to the darkness in the Annex
  • Anne's first birthday in the Annex

Anne celebrated her first birthday after entering the Annex. It has been almost one year since Anne received her diary, Kitty. This was a character development event because the scene was told as no other. It seems not as important to the characters. It just meant that it would soon be approaching the first anniversary of being in the Annex. This relates to the theme because to Anne, this was the light in the darkness that Anne needed to brighten her day.
