Otto first gave his daughter Anne a diary in June 1942, when she was 13 years old for her birthday.

In early July 1942 the family received a letter telling them about a work camp they could attend. Her family knew that they had to run away.

On August 4, 1944, after 25 months in hiding, Anne Frank and the seven others in the Secret Annex were discovered by the Gestapo, the German secret state police, who had learned about the hiding place.
