    After Hitler had been elected as chancellor, on March 27, 1933, the city of Cologne declared "Jewish firms are henceforth ineligible to submit bids, form contracts, etc." On March 29, the president of Hesse announced, "It is a matter of honor to the German and Hessian to eliminate any foreign, international, and Jewish influence on the news, entertainment, and advertising sections of newspapers."

    On April 1, 1933, the Nazi party passed an order for uniformed, and in a few cases, armed Nazis to block entrances to every Jewish store and business in Germany to prevent costumers from entering. A law executed on April 7th mandated that all institutions of the Reich, including schools and universities, were to be "cleansed." This meant that Jewish teachers and people who opposed Nazi ideology were considered enemies of the Reich. These instances caused the Frank family to move to Amsterdam.
