The cattle were another very important animal to the New World. They were brought to Mexico in 1521 by Christopher Columbus. Cattle played a big role in making agriculture possible, however, they did lead to diseases among regions in America.

In 1493, on his second voyage to the New World, Columbus took sheep with him as a "walking food supply." He left some sheep in Cuba and Santo Domingo. Sheep served as an important food souce and allowed for the making of clothes and other things that used their wool.

Turkeys are believed to have first been brought to Britain in 1526 by Yorkhireman William Strickland. Turkeys originated in Mexico, and were one of the few animals exchanged from North America to Europe. Therefore, this animal was a New World to Old World exchange. Camels never became popular in the New World. They were killed for food by escaped slaves and were extinct by 1615.

Horses were brought ashore in the early 1600s and found hospitable climate and terrain in North America. Horses arrived in Virginia as early as 1620 and in Massachusetts in 1629.The horses shifted the Native Americans to a nomadic lifestyle opposed to agriculture. Angora goats were imported to the United States beginning in the 1850s, and Texas became the center of mohair production.

The first shipment of llamas to Australia occurred in 1857, and was made into the South Australian settlement of Port Lincoln. This was one of the few animals of the New World that was exchanged to the Old World.
