Ireland getting freedom from Great Brtiain
Malachy McCourt was born and grew up in Nothern Ireland. While he was growing up Ireland was taken over by Great Britain. Later in his life he wounded up to be a fugitive with a price on his head. This caused him to move to the United States where he met wife, and Franks Mother Angela. When Ireland was free was the English it was alot better for Malachys family who had stayed there. -
Making the North and South of Ireland
In 1921, the British Government partitioned Ireland into two semi-autonomous regions: Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. On 11 July 1921, a ceasefire was agreed between the separatists and the British Government. Franks Dad was from the north of Irealnd and always it always caused him alot of problems. The people didnt like Malachy in the part of Irealnd where they were living in because they didnt like the notherners so it was even harder for Malachy. -
The Great Depression
While Frank McCourt was growing up him and his family suffered in the Great Depression. The Great Depression was the deepest and longest-lasting economic downturn in the history of the Western industrialized world. It was very difficult for Frank's Dad Malachy to keep, or find a job while they lived in New York and if you dont have a job you dont have food to put on the table. -
FDR elected for president
For the McCourt's last few months in the United States Malacky, Franks Dad coudlnt get a job. When he had a job before he would bring his paycheck home every friday, but then they stopped coming. Malachy would go to the Bars at night and drink away his paycheck. Malachy ended up getting fired from that job so they had no money. He kept telling his family that the president is good and would help them and soon he would have a job. -
The Irish Economy goes down
The Irish economy was never really that great after they gained control from the English. This was very hard on the McCourt family because they had no money and without money they had no food or shelter. Mr. McCourt could never find a job because of the economy and could never keep a job because of his drinking. -
Alcoholics Anonymous Founded
The Alcholics Anonymous Founded was an international mutual aid fellowship founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. AA states that its primary purpose is to help alcoholics to stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety. In the McCourt family, Franks father Malachy was from northern Ireland. Malachy was also an alcoholic that would run to alcohol anytime he saw trouble. Many people would blame him being from nothern Ireland that made him an alcoholic. -
Typhus
Typhus is an infectious disease caused by rickettsiae, characterized by headaches, and fever. There are several forms, transmitted by vectors such as lice, ticks, mites, and rat fleas. Frank had typhus while he was going up and had to be in the hospital for 2 months and was lucky to make it out, -
The Great Famine
In Ireland in the 1940s there was a time refered to as the Great Famine. People used to think as famine as a disease. The McCourt family were always hungry and hardly even had any bread to put on the table. This caused them to be very weak and easier to get sick. -
Child ratings
In 1949 the rate of having a child was possible but being able to keep it alive was hard. It was easy for the women to get pregant in these days but to keep the baby alive until birth and then be able to raise it in this economy was tough. There were also so many dieseases and sicknesses going around with no medicine it was hard to keep the litte ones alive. -
The Korean War
The Korean War was a war between North and South Korea, in which a United Nations force led by the United States of America fought for the South, and China fought for the North. When Frank finally got the money to go back to America he fought in the war for the USA.
