    The Xia Dynasty was the first government to come up in ancient China and it was the 1st to adhere to the policy of dynastic succession making it the 1st dynasty of China. It was regarded as a mythical construct of later in time Chinese historians until excavations happened in the late 20th century found sites that were related to descriptions in the earlier historians accounts. The Xia was overtaken by the Shang Dynasty.

Many of the ideas developed by figures like Laozi, Confucius, Mencius and Mozi, who all lived during the Eastern Zhou period, would shape the character of Chinese civilization up to now.
