  • Jamestown Settlement

    Jamestown Settlement
    Jamestown, Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. Jamestown led the way for other settlements that eventually developed into the country that we live in today. Jamestown is still standing and is home to a living-history park, a reenactment of the original Jamestown Settlement.
  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War
    (1754-1763) The French and Indian War was the part of the 7 Year's War that took place in America. The war was fought between the French and their allies, the native Americans, againt the British colonists. It put a financial burden on both the French and the British. It also eliminated the Natives' main ally— now there was little resistance against British expansion.
  • Revolutionary War

    (1775-1783) The Revolutionary War was the war between Great Britian and the 13 colonies. At the end of the Revolutionary War, the 13 colonies had gained their independence and began the country we know today as the United States.
  • Lousiana Purchase

    Lousiana Purchase
    The Lousiana Purchase was the transfer land that now makes up nearly 1.3 of the U.S. from the French to the United States. The Lousiana Purchase greatly increased the U.S.'s influence over North America and well as its size. It gave Americans control of the Mississippi river and removed France's presence in North America.
  • Indian Removal Act

    Indian Removal Act
    The Indian Removal Act allowed Pres. Jackson to negotiate with the Native Americans in an effort to relocate them from their homelands to federal territory west of the Mississippi river. The Removal Act forced thousands of Natives out of their homes. It stressed the relationship between the Natives and the settlers and it forced many Natives into poor socio-economic status that can still be felt by their descendants today.
  • California Gold Rush

    California Gold Rush
    (1848- 1855) The California Gold Rush is the name for the time period after gold was found in California and thousands of hopeful gold miners flocked to the state in search of gold. The gold rush was responsible for the growth of San Francisco from the small settlement to the huge city it is today. The gold rush spurred on many new innovations in transportation, mining, and even clothing!
  • Assassination of Lincoln

    Assassination of Lincoln
    President Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theater. He was the first American president to be assassinated. Lincoln was honored by Americans in both the North and the South.
  • Civil War

    Civil War
    (1861-1865) The Civil War was fought between the North and the South. The war was caused by several factors, among them slavery, State's rights, and territorial disputes. In the end, the North won, abolishing slavery and ending Confederate nationalism.
  • Suffrage Movement

    Suffrage Movement
    (late 19th-early 20th century) The Suffrage Movement in the United States was the rally for Women's Rights in America. In 1920, the 19th amendment to the constitution was signed, giving women the right to vote. It's been an uphill battle that is still being fought today, but the women of the U.S. are finally seeing justice.
  • Civil Rights Movement

    Civil Rights Movement
    (1955-1968) Minorities in the United States have a long history of being treated unfairly. Even after the abolition of slavery, blacks were subject to segregation. After years of peaceful protest, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, banning discrimination based on race, color, region, or national origin.
