    The first sign of a political party was in America's two-party system, or "party systems". This began with the Federalist Party, which supported the ratification of the Constitution, and the Democratic-Republican Party or the Anti-Administration Party (Anti-Federalists)

The early Republican Party consisted of northern Protestants, factory workers, professionals, businessmen, prosperous farmers, and after the Civil War, former black slaves.
