American Revolution Causes

  • French and Idian War

    The war was a result from ongoing frontier tensions I North America as both French and British imperial officials and colonist sought to extend each countries sphere of influence in frontier regions.
  • Proclaim of 1763

    King George the third wanted to increase cooperation with Native Americans and to avoid further wars so he created the proclamation of 1763. It stated that colonist were forbidden from settling on West Appalachians or beyond the head lands of the river. This made the colonist very mad because they were looking forward to building on that land.
  • The Currency Act

    The Currency Act of 1764 was after the French and Indian War had ended. The act banned the use of paper money in all 13 colonies. In passing this the British government was attempting to have a greater amount of control over the individual colonies.
  • Stamp Act

    The required tax stamps on so many items and documents including playing cards newspapers and marriage licenses. Prime Minister George Greenville stated that this direct tax was intended for the colonies for defense. Taxes imposed by Britain had been indirect or hidden. This made the colonist mad cause they had to pay taxes and Britain didn't.
  • The Boston Massacre

    Captain Tomas Preston and his detachment of seven or eight men were surrounded quickly. A soldier fired a gun into the crowd of people and it was immediately followed by more shots. the crowd of people were untamable. This left several people wounded and killed five people.
  • First Continental Congress

    In response to the Intolerable Acts 12 of the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia from September to October in 1774. One of the main results of this was creation of The Association calling for a boycott of British goods. This made the British mad at the colonist.
  • The Boston Tea

    In 1774 the colonist dressed like American Indians and boarded a ship at night. They began throwing all the tea that was on the ship over board into the harbor. All the tea that was thrown into the harbor was ruined.
  • Lexington and Concord

    British troops were ordered to Lexington and concord to seize stores of colonial gunpowder and to capture Samuel Adams and John Hancock. At Lexington open conflict occurred and eight Americans were killed. At concord the British troops were forced to retreat with the loss of seventy men.
