     Native American Myths
    During the Ice Age period hunters followed mammoths and other creatures across the Bering Land Bridge. They kept moving south and enventually settled into tribes in the Americas. In these tribes told stories that were orally passed down through generations. These stories used metaphors to explain things like the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. The natives were very in touch with nature; the characters in their stories were both humans and animals.

    "Columbus did not discover a new world; he established contact between two worlds, both already old" (J.H Parry 5) When the explorers arrived in the Americans they found that the New World was already inhabited. The Native Americans had already been living here for thousands of years; they had their own cultures traditions and beliefs that contrasted alot with those of the Europeans.

    The Sky Tree
    People have always wondered how this earth came to be. Most all of the native american tribes had their own myths about the creation of the earth. The Huron tribe had a story called "The Sky Tree". In the myth all of earth is covered in water and the animals bring up soil from the bottom of the ocean to make a giant island. Then the Sky tree falls from Sky Land and took root. This myth shows the natives connection to nature.

    The Puritains landed at Plymouth, MA on December of 1620. They encounterend a whole different world than they had ever known. They brought their belifs and religions with them. They were radical Christians, true to their values. Their writings reflected their great love for God.

    Puritanism

    Puritains settlers arrived at Plymoth rock in the 1620's. They left England because the believed that the Anglican church was still stuck on the Catholic traditions. They didn't have freedom of religion in England so they decided to go to the New World. In the new world they established a theocracy. We can learn about their struggles and belifs through their writing. They wrote about their devotion to God and their values. Their writing was simple and direct this is called Plain Style.

    Anne Bradstreet's House Burns
    The poem "Here Follow Some Verses upon the Burning of Our House, July 10, 1666" was written a Puritain woman, named Anne Bradstreet, when her house burned down. Anne was a housewife in Bay Colony, Massachusetts. In her spare time she wrote poetry but never tried to get published. This should be a tragic poem of a woman who lost it all but in the middle of her drakest hour Anne blesses the Lord's name. She lies her faith and hope on what she knows waits for her in heaven.
