  • Indian Removal Act

    Indian Removal Act
    This was an act passed by congress which forced all Native Americans east of the Mississippi River, to move west into indian eservations located in modern day Oklahoma. The Native Americans were promised land west of the Mississippi, which they were granted in the short term; however the US governent would continue to take the Native American land even west of the Mississippi
  • Trail of Tears

    This is the passage used by the Native Americans to pass from east of the Mississippi, to their new home west of the Mississippi. The trail got its name from the rugged conditions that the Native Americans were put in during their migration. They were forced to migrate on foot, and without proper supplies to make the journey. Over 5,000 of the Cherokee died making the journey.
  • Treaty of Fort Laramie

    Treaty of Fort Laramie
    In april of 1868 a meeting was held at Fort Laramie betweent he United States Government and the Souix Indians. The Treaty of Fort Laramie aimed to give the Souix Indians the Black Hills Territory, which was a reservation in the Dakota Territory. The United States would not end up following this agreement, and the Native Americans would again be kicked from their lands soon after
  • Custer's Last Stant

    Custer's Last Stant
    This was the first major victory achieved by the American Indians against the United States. Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull led an attack against General Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn. This battle lasts only a few hours, and leads to the death of almost all of Custer's men, and the complete humiliation of the United States army. This proved that the American Indians were willing to fight for their land, and that they may prove to be a larger threat than previously anticipated.

    Wounded Knee Massacre
    Shortly after the death of Sitting Bull, the United States 7th Cavalry come upon a Souix Indian camp and open fire on the unarmed people staying there. Approximately 300 innocent were killed during this massacre, most of them women and children. This effectively ends Indian resistance to the white mans settlement in the continental united states.
