The attack on Fort Sumter marked the first battle to take place during the Civil War. The attack was launched by the Confederates in order to take the fortress. The attack lasted until April 14th, 1861 and ended with victory for the Confederacy.

The battle took place in southwestern Tennessee where Union forces came back from near defeat to drive back the Confederate army. The battle ended in a stalemate that lasted for three weeks, 13,000 Union soldiers died and 11,000 soldier deaths on the Confederate side.

The bloodiest day throughout the entire war occurred during this battle. The South lost 10,316 troops and the North lost 12,401 troops. It was after this battle that Lincoln changed the main focus of the war onto freeing the slaves.
