    1492: Conquest of Paradise Event
    EVENT: Columbus arriving at La Navidad on his second voyage which lasted 4 years.
    FACT CHECK: The real event states most of the men argued over woman. However, the movie only depicted two men discussing which women they ¨wanted¨. No arguing.
    CONNECTION: Columbus set sail to explore the ¨New World¨, land not yet discovered. To this day only 78% of our land and 22% of our ocean is currently discovered.
    RATING: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ - It was hard to understand due to their accents and them talking so quietly.
  • 12 Years a Slave

    12 Years a Slave
    EVENT: 1841-1853: The years Soloman Northup was kidnapped and sold into slavery.
    FACT CHECK: In the movie we are only shown two slave owners Northup encountered, whereas in the book it read he had several other owners throughout the years.
    CONNECTION: Just like hundreds of years ago, slavery to this day is still a huge problem in Africa with an estimated amount of 9.2M Africans in servitude (slaves)
    RATING: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ - It was a good movie but very hard to watch due to some of the scenes shown.
  • Lincoln

    Lincoln
    EVENT: The day the House voted and passed the 13th amendment to abolish slavery.
    FACT CHECK: According to the New York Times, after it was announced the amendment was passed, everyone from all sides showed the fullest expression of joy & that the scene was so ¨grand" it couldn't even be put into words.
    CONNECTION: It took 2/3 of the House & Senate to pass an amendment, just like today. It only took 27/36 states to ratify whereas today its 38/50.
    RATING: ⭐ ⭐ - Slow pacing and hard to follow.
  • The Lost Battalion

    The Lost Battalion
    E: Whittlesey and his men entered the Argonne Forest in October (2-8) of 1918 and eventually units were lost of their location.
    FC: A few men were captured in the movie, however 150 men went missing or was taken as prisoners throughout their 5 day siege.
    C: There is 50+ ongoing ¨armed conflicts¨ with military involvement. Hundred of fatalities still occur in almost every conflict/war.
    R: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐- It really showcased how real these battles are and what people go through for our country.
  • The Grapes of Wrath

    The Grapes of Wrath
    E: The Joad´s traveling West on Route 66 away from previous problems in the East.
    FC: In the novel, Route 66 is described as a ¨river¨ of immigrants in the same position as the Joad´s. The movie depicted a few families (occasionally) alongside the Joad family while on their journey.
    C: Men in the 30s would have to accept jobs that pay minimum wage in order to support their family. Nowadays, we have minimum wage laws which prevent such conditions.
    R: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ - Could've been more descriptive.

    EVENT: The 332nd Fighter Group was assigned to protect the Fifteenth Air Force (heavy bombers) from May 1944 to April 1945.
    FACT CHECK: While the Allies did call the 332nd Fighter Group, ¨Red Tails¨, the airmen were commonly called ¨Red-Tail Angels¨ as well.
    CONNECTION: There is over 50 ongoing ¨armed conflicts¨ that include military involvement. Hundreds of fatalities still occur in almost every conflict/war.
    RATING: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ - It was very interesting and emotional.

    EVENT: On Christmas day, the Krichinsky family received their very first television.
    FACT CHECK: Today, 2B people in 160+ countries consider Christmas to be the most important holiday of the year. In the US, 9 out of 10 people celebrate the holiday.
    CONNECTION: TV today has changed dramatically in ways like color, HD, channels, viewing time, shows on air, commercials shown, size & variety of Tv´s.
    RATING: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ - I rated it a 3/5 because I missed day 2 and only saw about an 1h of the movie.
  • Selma

    Selma
    E: Dr. King meeting with the President to discuss voting rights for African Americans.
    FC: Unlike the movie, LBJ and MLK partnership on civil rights is one of the most productive in American history. LBJ was very cooperative to secure voting rights and even came up with suggestions.
    C: Many marches take place today to highlight issues, some being: Women Marches, March for Our Lives, Families Belong Together and Take Back the Vote.
    R:⭐⭐⭐⭐- It was well depicted and showcased the events well.
  • Rescue Dawn

    Rescue Dawn
    EVENT: Lt. Dieter Dengler is held captive along with 5 other prisoners in a POW camp after crashing a plane over Laos.
    FACT CHECK: In the real event, 7 prisoners were held captive, however, the director said 6 characters were more manageable for scripting.
    CONNECTION: In the 60's, almost 1500 fatalities occurred due to aircraft crashes. In 2018, 500 deaths to plane crashes were recorded, which actually caused a rise in plane crash deaths.
    RATING: ⭐ ⭐ - I missed day 1 but it was an okay movie.
  • Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

    Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
    E: Winnie Mandela´s role in the apartheid years before and after prison.
    FC: Though the movie only focused on Winnie´s influence, women had a huge roll as well. The movie missed huge events and the importance of the ANC Women’s League, which Winnie was apart of.
    C: The ANC Women's League is still active today. It was founded in 1931 and the current president is Bathabile Dlamini.
    R:⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐- It was historically accurate and well depicted.
  • The Butler

    The Butler
    EVENT: Gloria Gaines affair along with her addiction to alcohol.
    FACT CHECK: Unlike what we were shown in the movie, Eugene Allen´s wife never had an affair or a drinking problem while he was working at the White House.
    CONNECTION: Nowadays in the White House, everyone who works under the same title, make about the same salary a year.
    RATING: ⭐⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ - I actually really enjoyed this movie and was super invested the entire time.
  • Forrest Gump

    Forrest Gump
    E: Jenny is sick and has to live with Gump.
    FC: Jenny tells Gump that she's suffering from a virus and ends up passing away. However, in the novel, Jenny reunites with Gump and their child and does NOT end up dying.
    C: Gump playing on an All-American ping pong team for the Military is something that happens, just not with ping pong. Military World Games include 26 recognized and played games with an objective relating to physical training.
    R: ⭐⭐- I only saw a day of the movie.
