    South African Apartheid
    In South Africa, apartheid takes place. Apartheid is the segregation of people based on their religon, race, or anything that makes them different. People are beaten and sometimes even killed if they try to stand up for whats right. There has been apartheid in South African for centuries. There are many people that have been affected by South African apartheid over the years.
  • Armenian Massacre

    Armenian Massacre
    The Armenian Massacre took place in Turkey. Turkish government, Young Turk, set out to destroy all Armenian living in the Ottoman Empire. Many Armenians were killed, but those that had remained were sent to concentration camps where they were left to die. It is estimated that about 1.5 million Armenian were killed in the genocide.

    German Holocaust
    The German Holocaust took place in Germany. Adolf Hitler was the dictator of Germany. The Nazis took violating human rights to a whole other level, they tortured and killed millions of people. Adolf Hitler wanted to have Germany rule the world so he started by eliminating people that he thought would get in their way. Close to 11 million were killed and many more were tortured and barely given any food or water. An exact number will never be known.

    The Soviets, under Joseph Stalin, were trying to get rid of things that they didnt want in their country of Russia. Soviets executed and imprisoned many of the people in Russia. In prison, people were treated very poorly. They were not given food or water and there was no where to go to the bathroom. People starved to death or caught infectious diseases.

    Rape of Nanjing
    This took place in the city of Nanjing in China. Japanese forces killed. raped, and tortured thousands of Chinese soldiers and civilians. Buildings were burned to the ground. These peoples human rights were violated in so many ways, they were murdered, raped and tortued. They never stood a chance. Japan wanted to take over China because they were trying to imperialize. Hundreds of thousands of people were affected by the Rape of Nanjing.
  • Rwanda Genocide

    Rwanda Genocide
    The killings began in Rwanda's capital city of Kigali. Killers would go door to door and murder the Tutsis. The Tutsis were slaughtered in their homes, churchs, schools, and hospitals. President Habyariman had been killed when a missile hit his plane. He was a Hutu who excluded Tutsis from the government. When he died the Tutsis started to participate in the government which the Hutu did not like. Hutu blamed Tutsis for their president's death and started to kill them.

    My Lai Massacre
    This is the most famous Vietamese war. US troops were sent to My Lai, a village in Vietnam. The soldiers found no one of military age. They met no resistance. US troops killed close to 175 people, most of which were little children barely old enough to even be able to take care of themselves. It took 3 days to bury all the bodies. Some werent shot, but had slit throats and some were mutilated. After 3 years in Danang, US base of operations, troops knew that anyone could be NLF fighters.

    Juan Peron was the leader of Argentina. The dictorial military wanted to control all the power and destroyed anyone in the way. The Dirty War was a period of state terrorism in Argentina and guerrilla warfare. The number of people that had disappeared range from 9,000 to 30,000.

    Uganda under Idi Amin
    Idi Amin was known as the "Butcher of Uganda". Around 300,000 people were killed during his presidency. Amin treated his people poorly. He took many people hostage and tortured them.
  • Chile under Augusto Pinochet

    Chile under Augusto Pinochet
    Augusto Pinochet was president of Chile. He was determined to exterminate leftism, the ideology of the political left, in Chile. Pinochet violated human rights prosecutions agaisnt members of the security forces. During his rule, more than 3,200 people were executed or disappeared, and thousands more were detained and tortured or exiled.

    Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge
    Pol Pot wanted to remove Cambodia from the rest of the world. He marched and led communist forces of the Khmer Rouge to Cambodia. People were slaughtered. Approximetly 1 million people or 1 seventh of Cambodia were murdered.

    Iraq under Saddam Hussein
    Saddam Hussein was the fifth president of Iraq. Hussein wanted to over throw the government, banks were put under his control. He led campaigns against the Kurdish people, he destroyed them and their villages. Saddam Hussein is held responsible for 200,000 deaths. Also, he launched a terrorist attack in the United States. Our president at the time has said that Saddam Hussein was not involved, but there is reason to believe he was. This attack had killed over 2,000 american people.

    Since 1991 an estimated 350,000 to 1,000,000 Somalians have died during the civil war. The fighting happened with little warning. There has been kidnapping, murder, and other threats to foreigners of many regions. There is no national government in Somalia so there really arent any laws. People starve to death and barely have enough water to survive. There are also many children soldiers in Somalia.

    Genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina
    The government of the Yugoslav republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina declared its interdependence from Yugoslavia. Bosnian Serb forces and a Serb dominated Yugslav army, targeted both Bosniak and Croatian civilians. They killed over 100,000 by 1995, it was the worst act of genocide since the Nazis in WW2.

    Sierra Leone and the child soldiers
    In Africa, The Republic of Sierra Leone has children under the age of 18 as soldiers. These children have been stripped of their childhood and have been faced with death. There has been civil wars for many years and children always get caught up right in the middle of them. In Africa there are over 300,000 children soldiers in 30 countries. 10,000 fought in the Sierra Leone 10-year civil war.
  • Darfur Conflict

    Darfur Conflict
    The struggle for land and power in the western Sudanese region of Darfur erupted into violence between Sudanese government forces and rebel groups protesting the marginalization of the region's black African ethnic groups by the Muslim central government. Arab militias supported by the government soon began enacting policies of ethnic cleansing including forced displacement and starvation, murder, torture and rape against Darfur's civilian population, leaving thousands of people dead.
