  • Artillery

    Artillery
    Artillery became an important factor during WWI. To offer protection against the shells, and provide defensive positions, both sides dug long networks of trenches. Many machine guns were set up in these trenches to hold off charging enemies.
  • Armored trains

    Armored trains
    Towards the begining of the war, many new technolegies were introduced. One included the armored tank. The armored tank became a much safer way to transport supplies and people for the war effort.
  • Animals introduced

    Animals introduced
    Another new tactic that was commonly used during the war was using different types of animals for different tasks, Dogs were used for many purposes. These included messenges, scouts, rescuers, etc.
  • Poison Gas

    Poison Gas
    Poison gas was first used in April of 1915. Soon after the Germans used it first, both sides began using it. The gas was used to provide lethal cover when launching an offensive.
  • Planes from the ocean

    Planes from the ocean
    During the war, there became a way for planes to take off from a ship in water. The first time a plane was ever catapulted off of the deck of a warship was on November 5th, 1915. This revolutionized aviation could be launched from the sea.
  • Tanks

    Tanks
    In order to more easily cross through no-man's-land, tanks were used. Tanks have tracks instead of wheels. These tracks helped tramendously in getting through the mud, creators, and barbed wire.
  • Bayonets in battle

    Bayonets in battle
    Soldiers used bayonets during a charge into a heavily defended area. These helped tramendously, because they didn't have a short reach compared to a normal knife. These also help clear out enemy tranches once they got in them.
  • Zimmerman Telegram

    Zimmerman Telegram
    In January of 1917, a German official with the name Zimmerman sent a telegram to the ambassador of Mexico. The telegram suggested that he make an offer to the Mexican government to become allies with Germany. Then Mexico would go to war with the United States with the aid of Germany.
  • Harry Frieman Drafted

    Harry Frieman Drafted
    On November 1917, Harry Frieman was drafted to the army. He was in the 313th machine gun company. Ha served in France
  • Planes introduced

    Planes introduced
    Another new technology that was introduced were planes for more than just transport. Planes were now also used for recon missions, and bombing enemy occupied areas. This could help generals when setting up for an assault.
  • Germany's last effort

    Germany's last effort
    In March of 1915, Germany launched a massive offensive on the western front. Germany was making a great effort in order to capture Paris. The Germans got very close to Paris, but were eventually stopped by French and American forces.
  • Harry Frieman arrives in Europe

    Harry Frieman arrives in Europe
    July 15th, 1918, he arrives in Europe form overseas. His company rode in a train with horses and other men. Soon after, they arrived at their camp.
  • Move to Verdun

    Move to Verdun
    Harry and his company turned in some belongins. Then they hiked to Verdun. After they arrived, they took up defensive positions.
  • Air raids occuring

    Air raids occuring
    During mid September, air raids would scarcely occur. Usually, people wouldn't get killed. Anti air weapons would defend them well enough.
  • Moved to the front lines

    Moved to the front lines
    On September 25, 1918, Harry and his company were moved to the trenches. He was part of a large push against enemy forces. They had to sleep in shell holes to protect themselves from artillery overnight.
  • Enemy launches counterattacks

    Enemy launches counterattacks
    On September 30th 1918, the enemy attempted a counterattack. The attack was repelled. From the enemy loss, they actually gained some ground.
