Henry the Navigator was born in Porto, Portugal, in 1394. Although he was neither a sailor nor a navigator, he sponsored a great deal of exploration along the west coast of Africa. Under his patronage, Portuguese crews founded the country's first colonies and visited regions previously unknown to Europeans.

In 1492 Christopher Columbus sails to the New World. He wanted to go to India but instead ended up in America which was called the new world in the 15th century. He asked the Portugal king and queen for caravels but they disagreed. so then he asked the Spanish king and queen but they disagreed at first then after Columbus asked them for 6 years they agreed and gave him three caravels La Nina,La Pinta and La Santa Maria.
