    Power Figure 1100-1980
The Power Figure, or Nkisi Nkondi, is a figure that has insertions of nails and pegs that represent a form of agreement or type of oath. The spirit world is a heavy influence of these figures as well. Tis is present in the Bilongos and eyes of the figures that function as a way to communicate with the spirit world. This is particularly interesting based off different the people of Africa settled disputes and the difference from today's traditions.

    Benin Wall Plaque
This is a plaque depicting Oba (the king) of the Benin Empire. He is surrounded by his attendants that carry shields. The plaque originally hung by many others in the palace of Oba. This plaque is showing the presence of trade in the empire and how it erupted tension between the Benin Empire and Portugal. It is interesting in how the ideal of trade was depicted in art instead of a written word.
  • Female (Pwo) Mask

    Female (Pwo) Mask
This mask is very interesting in the way that a man would wear this mask even though it is depicting a female. It was made to honor would who were fertile and have given birth successfully. The men would dance while wearing this mask and it would show the beauty and honor of women. This mask is intriguing to me because the eyes are very large which show spiritual ability in giving birth.

It is from the Igbo. A tradition they have is the Ikengo figures which are carved wooden figures that have a human face but animal qualities. This one was probably made for a warrior. Aka Elephant Mask
It is a beaded mask used by the Elephant Society in Central Africa. This was a masquerade which was used with a costume to honor the king and harmony. It was worn with other elements representing other animals which represent the powerful essence of each element. It is interesting how the elephant was presented as the power of the kings hierarchy in society. It is very colorful and full of energy and it would be very cool to see in its natural state.
