    Hamburg masacre
    2 plantation owners drove by the militia training in Hamburg and reported them for obstruction of public roads. The 2 plantation owners ordered that the militia be disband, but when the court date was pushed back the southerners took matters into there own hands. They fired on the town and captured and executed the people they could catch.

    Ben Tillman's Election
    Ben Tillman served as governor in South Carolina and believed strongly in white superiority. He did anything to make it harder on African Americans, including "race bating" which is putting hardships on easy targets. He made laws that made it almost impossible for African Americans to vote, like he made "poll taxes" and he made "the grandfather clause".

    Plessy V. Ferguson
    Homer Plessy, a freed African american boarded a train and took a seat in the white section. He was commanded by the conductor to move and refused, when he did he was arrested for violating segregationist laws. Plessy took this to court and he was found guilty, the court upheld laws enforcing segregation in railway car. This infuriated many freed men around the US.

    African Americans were unprotected and many former plantation owners took advantage of this. They formed a group called the Klu Klux Klan that terrorized the African Americans. in 1871 President Grant passed the KKK act and sent troops back into SC. Ironically this only made the white insurgents more mad and made them become more violent and rebel.The Klu Klux Klan was revived again in 1910 in response to a movie depicting the reconstruction as a "lost cause", and reminding them of the war.
