  • Human rights activist Floribert Chebeya found dead

Floribert Chebeya was a prominent figure in the human rights scene in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and he wanted to help the people. Sadly, Chebeya also made enemys with different groups for his attempts to help, and eventually ended up being tragically found dead in the back of his car.
  • Operation Rwenzori leaves the people scared

Operation Rwenzori was an operation set up with the intentions to rid the country of the Ugandan rebels. Although It would seem like this would help with there being less fighting between groups, this led to the fleeing of 90,000 people from the country.
  • $8 billion to be given in aid to Congo approved by World Bank and IMF

With lots of suffering happening in the DRC, some outsiders are trying to help the people in the form of money. World Bank and IMF approved the deal to give 8 billion dollars in aid to the Congo, which would hopefully be used to help get the country back on it's feet, after a long history of suffering dating back to colonial times under King Leopold II and his harsh regime.
  • FARDC soldiers and agents of the national police committed executions, rape and lootings

  • Colonel Kibibi Mutware jailed for mass rape

Colonel Mutware was jailed on New Years Day for mass rape when 49 women came to testify. Sadly, in the Congo rape is often used as a scare tactic and weapon against the people. People have begun to live life in fear, as there seems to be no end to the brutality. Solutions have been attempted to stop this awful reality, such as human rights groups and other groups of activists, but it seems that none have worked yet, as the violence continues.
  • Mass rapes carried out by government troops

On July 22, 2011, government troops carried out a mass rape on innocent people. With condtitions of insecurity like this, the people are scared. They have nothing assuring them troops won't come throught the next day to kill and rape and pillage their village. They are scared.
  • 1,000 inmates escape from Congo prison

On Septembet 7, 2011 masked gunmen broke into a prison and freed 1,000 convicts out of their cells, icluding a high official in the Mai Mai group. The Congo is being governed in such a way that there is no security for the people. Convicts break out of prison, homes are broken into, people are killed and raped, but the government is very weak against these tragedys, and their attempts to clean up the messes are usually not very good.
  • Thomas Lubango sentenced to war crimes

Thomas Lubango is being sentenced to 14 years behind bars fro war crimes commited in 2002 and 2003. Lubango was a Congolese warlord who used child soldiers under the age of 15 to fight in his army. It is good to see that there is some action being taken in a good direction of taking out warlords and militias who are harmful to the people. This is a good solution, but trials such as this one should be happening more.
  • M23 rebel troops withdraw from Goma

After the M23 rebel troops seized control of Goma for a short period of time, they now have withdrawn to the outskirts. The M23 rebel group, said to be backed by Uganda and Rwanda, is now wanting to attempt peace deals. Peace deals are a good way to solve the issues of dispute, but they need to figure out a way that the promise can be kept, as that seems to often be the issue. People here are living in fear of one another and the groups around them, as there is so much violence going on.
