Marbury vs, Madison (Political)
On this day in history, the case Marbury vs. Madison was decided. The Supreme Court decided that judicial review would be established. Judicial Review is the right given to the Judical branch to overlook the other two branches and decide if laws or decision passed by them are constitutional. This is a political event because it's a law/order passed. -
Louisiana Purchase (Economic)
This is a negotiation made between the US and France, in which the US would pay France 15 million dollars and in return France would give the US 827,000 square miles of land. This is an economic event because it helped expand the size of the US, which affected us both physically and economically. -
Embargo Act is passed (Political)
The Embargo Act passed Dec. 22, 2014, prohibited American ships from partaking in foreign trade. This would also mean that they could not even sail to these foreign ports. This is a political event because it's an act passed to protect the USA. -
The PANIC of 1819 (Economic)
The PANIC of 1819 was a crisis caused by poor banking and irresponsible systems. The main cause of the crisis was the Second Bank, which offered poor and bad money and loans. The banks failed, people lost their jobs, and mortgages went into foreclosure because of it. This is an economic event because the economy shut down and was in a poor, bad state from 1819-1822. -
Missouri Compromise (Social)
This Compromise was used as a way to help set the debate of where slavery was legal and illegal. This deal states MO was a slvaery state and Maine was part of the Union. Also, slavery was prohibited in states above the 36, 30 latitude line. This is a social event because it affected Missouri and made it a slave state, even though it was suppose to be a free state. -
Land Act of 1820 (Political)
The Land Act of 1820 allowed anyone within the USA to purchase land but had to pay it off within four years of purchasing it. This would have to be bought on credit. This act helped the USA economy as well as benefitted the people because it allowed the people to expand their horizons and land. This is a political event because it's a law that benefitted the USA. -
Forgery Act of 1830 (Political)
This was an act passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom stating that anyone who participated in anytype of forgery (money, documents, etc). would be sentenced to death. This was a way of protecting the United Kingdom and ensuring that it's people and it legal documents/work would be safe and out of the hands of those who wanted to destroy them. This is a political event because it was an act passed to protect the United Kingdom. -
Invention of the ether ice machine (Technological)
The ether ice machine was invented in 1834 by Jacob Perkins. This was one of the early types of fridges that were invented during that time. This was a efficent and easy way to create ice and store food so it would not spoil. This is a technological event because it was a new prooduct that served a purpose to improve the lives of people. -
Invention of the Morse Code (Technological)
The Morse Code was invented and named after Samuel Morse.The Morse Code was a set of dots and dashes that helped send secret messages.This is a technological event because it changed the way people communicated during the Civil War. -
Anti-kidnapping (Social)
The Anti-Kidnapping Law was passed in 1840 in New York. The goal of this law was to protect anyone from being kidnapped and then enslaved because of it. This law would help affect African Americans as well as children, women, and the elders. They would be saved from rape, enslavement, and possibly killing. This is a social event because it protects many of the minorities and helps them live their lives safely. -
Gadsen Purchase (Economic)
On December 30, 1853 two men (James Gadsen and Antonio Lopex de Santa Anna) met and signed the Gadsen Purchase. This purchase entitled the US 29,670 sq. miles of Mexico for ten million dollars. This is an economic event because the United States would gain land that helped them build up their economy through the transcontinental railroad. -
Battle of Fort Sumter (Military )
The confederate forces led by Beauregard fired on the Union forces at Fort Sumter near Charleston, South Carolina. The battle was the first battle that started the Civil War. This is a military event because it's a battle. -
Battle of the Bull Run (Military)
On July 16, 1861, the Confederates (led by Jackson) and the Union (led by Mc Dowell) fought the famous battle called the Bull Run. The Union tried to march against the Confederates near Centreville. Fighting raged on on the 21st and the Confederates were able to success fully win. This is where Jackson got his name, "Stonewall". This is a military event because it's a battle that took place duing the Civil War. -
Legal Tender Act passed (Political)
The Legal Tender Act was the act that allowed paper money, instead of silver and gold reserves, to be used to pay government bills. This helped increase the production of paper money, that we use today. This is a political event because it's an act passed by Congress. -
Homestead Act is passed (Political)
The Homestead Act, passed on the 20th of May in 1862, allowed for anyone who applied to get land (like small farmers) at little or no cost at all. This was a great way to bring back order to the country after the war because it gave people a place to farm and a home to live in. This is a politcal event because it's an act passed by Congress. -
Land Grant College Act (Political)
The Land Grant College Act was a law step up that would produce colleges and institutions in states that did not have them. They would teach things that were popular during the mid 1800's like agriculture and mechanical arts. This led to the rise of education. This is a political event because it benefits the country as a whole, plus it's an act passed. -
Signing of the Emancipation Proclomation (Social)
The Emancipation Proclomation was the document signed on January 1, 1863 by Abe Lincoln. Abe signed this document stating any states that seceded the Union (becoming the Confederacy) would not permit slavery anymore. This paved the way for abolishment of slavery. This is a social event because it affected slaves. They would become free and could later enlist to fight in the army. -
Battle of Gettysburg (Military)
This battle fought between July 1-3, was won by the Union. Robert E. Lee was leading his troops up the North in order to increase the movement of peace to the north. George Gordon Meade, commander of the Union, was also in the North. The two armies centered around Gettsyburg and fought for 3 days. This is the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. This is a military event because it's a battle between two groups. -
Thirteenth Amendment is Passed (Social)
On January 31, 1865, the 13th amendment was passed by the Senate. This amendment abolished slavery within the United States of America. Eventually on Decmeber 6th of that same year, the states would ratify this amendment. This is a social event because the amendment would destroy slavery and it affected people who were slave. Now they were set free. -
Issuing the Freedman's Bureau (Social)
After the end of the Civil War, Congress issued the Freedman's Bureau. This document was used to help African Americans and anyone who was enslaved. This was used as a way to ease the transition between slavery and freedom. This is a social event because the document helped ex-slaves find jobs, education, and easy ways to adapt to freedom.
