    Ulysses S. Grant is appointed lieutenant general. Next day President Lincoln changed his title to general. Grant took command of the union army next day.

    General John Bell Hood’s second attempt to, kick the Union Army out. This battle kills a lot of confederate troops. Confederate army loses the battle. Union general Sherman burned 400 buildings in Atlanta after the win.

    Abraham Lincoln was reelected as the president of United States. He ran against Democratic candidate George B McClellan. Lincoln won by more than 400,000 votes,
  • Assault and capture of Fort Fisher

    Union army attacked this fort. They gained control of the fort at the mouth of Cape River. This was the last southern sea port that was free of blockade.

    Union troops officially occupy Richmond and Petersburg, Virginia.After Lee flreaf the city.
  • Battle of Appomattox Court House and Surrender

    After Lee was cornered he tried to break the Union army. After he fails he sent a letter to General Grant to surrender. That afternoon he surrendered to General Grant.
  • The Fall of Petersburg and Richmond

    General Lee abandons Richmond and Petersburg to move westwards. He hoped to join Confederate army in North Carolina. This meant that Union gained control of the Confederate States Capital.
  • Attack on Fort Stedman

    This was Lee’s last offensive move. Lee’s army had weakened by disease and lack of supplies. The army briefly gains control of Union fort. Later the Union gains control of its fort. This was a union victory.
