Gravey foundeed the Black Star Steamship Company in 1919. He wanted african Americans to invest in it saying that they would get huge returns. He never turned profit and was jailed for mail fraud. Coolidge pardoned Garvey but deported him. A news paper writer said "he made black people proud.....He taught them that black is beautiful"
