Waiting Room
In the beginning of the story we are introduced to the main character Eckles who is in a waiting room staring at a sign for the time safari he was about to enter. -
Time Machine
Eckles pays ten thousand dollars to to on a safari and travel back in time to shoot a dinosaur. He is told to follow the rules and listen to his Safari Guide. Eckles can't stop admiring the time machine and is in awe. Eckles then talks with the man in the office and tells him it's a good thing the Keith won the election to become president and not Deutscher because it would have been a bad dictatorship. -
Previous Safari Events
After talking about the election the man in the office tells Eckles that he just needs to focus on shooting and killing the dinosaur. The man then tells Eckles about the horrible occurences last year on the Safaris, but Eckles thinks he is saying that to scare his. -
Preparing for the Safari
After his talk with the man Eckles gets ready, with their guns in their hands, to enter the time machine. It explains the machine and how years go my in a blink of an eye. Once inside the machine after traveling through the years the men put on their oxygen helmets. Eckles was very tense on the machine and his face was pale. On the machine there were five men total including Eckles, plus Travis, the Safari Leader; his assistant Lesperance; and two other hunters, Billings and Kramar. -
Explaining the Safari 2
He also explains the jungle and how there is a path made by Time Safari for their use only that does not affect anything from the past and gravitates six inches above the ground. He makes it clear to the men that they MUST stay on the path and that there will be a penalty if they do, also he tells the men not to shoot any animals they don't. -
Explaining the Safari 1
All the men talk and ask questions about killing the dinosaurs. Travis told the men to first blind the dinosaur and then go back into the brain. Many more years passed by and Eckles was growing anxious, he thought about how exciting his Safari was going to be. Then the Machine stopped and the fog blew away and the men were in an ancient time. Travis tells the men that nobody has been born yet and many famous historical figures are not yet born. -
The Butterfly Effect
After Eckles asks why they are not allowed off the path Travis goes into great detail and explains to the men the Butterfly Effect. He explains how everything in the past will effect the future and how they need to be careful not to disturb anythig from the past because the results of effecting the past could make greatly effect the future for the worse. Travis also says that they aren't positive that effecting the past could change the future but he says they don't even want to take a chance. -
Animals for Shooting
After explaing the Butterfly Effect and answering questions Travis tells the men that they can only shoot the animals with the red paint on them. He tells the hunters that Lesperance already came back into the past to find the animals that were already going to die and mark them with red paint. Eckles asks if when he went back in time he say them on their Safari, but Lesperance tells him that that is a paradox and how it doesn't work that way. After talking the men got ready to leave the Machine -
The Jungle 1
In the high, broad jungle it seemed like an entire world with dinosaurs filling the sky with sounds and music. When Eckles playfully pointed his rifle at the pterodactyl Travis got mad. Eckles then asked where the Tyrannosaurus was and Travis replied and said they would see it in a minute and repeated again to only shoot it if it had red paint, and repeated to stay on the path. Eckles was thinking about how odd it was the in the future Election Day is over and how Keith won... -
The Jungle 2
, and that things that mattered to much then don't matter at all here. Travis ordered the men to talk off the safety of their guns and then told the hunters when to shoot. Eckles is getting excited and thinking about all the previous game he has already hunted. Travis motioned for the hunters to stop moving and pointed to the dinosaur. One hundred yards away from the hunters stood the T-Rex. -
The Tyrannosaurus 2
Travis was telling Eckles, who said he wanted out, to shut up and go back to the Machine quietly, but it was to late and the dinosaur saw them. The dinosaur stood tall and looked to beautiful and horrific at the same time. Eckles was saying how he had good safaris, and good guidlines before, but he wasn't ready for this. Eckles was again told to return to the Machine but went the wrong way. -
The Tyrannosaurus
The T-Rex was huge with tall, striding legs, it was much taller than most of the trees, it was pure muscle, and its skin was like "the mail of a terrible warrior." It looked up into the sky and the hunters could see its large, jagged teeth, and when it ran it crushed everything in its path. Eckles was in a state of shock and was talking when Travis said to be quiet because it hadn't seen them yet. Eckles looking at the dinosaur doubted their possiblity to kill the animals and said they couldn't. -
The Attack
The dinosaur then attacked the men and they fired their rifles. While this was happening, without his knowledge Eckles stepped off the path and walked through the jungle. The men and T-Rex were still attacking each other, and the dinosaur was getting ready to kill and crush the men, when it fell to the ground with a thundering sound. The dinosaur gaves its last efforts but the men fired their guns and the monster died. -
The Aftermath
After the dinosaur died Billing and Kramar sat on the pathway ad threw up while Travis and Lesperance stood cursing. Eckles found his way back to the Machine and waited for the other men. Travis walked back to the Machine and told the men to clean up. You could still hear the sound of the dinosaur with its body shutting down. Right on time the tree that was supposed to kill the animal fell. The two hunters were asked if they wanted their picture with the animal, but they declined and went back.. -
The Aftermath 2
to the time machine. Eckles then apologized, and Travis told him to stand up. Travis told Eckles to get up and walk on the Path alone because he wasn't coming back. When Lesperance tried to step in Travis said to stay out of it and then started to yell at Eckles saying he ruined them, almost killed them, and possibly changed the future by running off the path. Eckles said he was willing to pay anything as long as he could return. Travis told Eckles the only way he was coming home was if he went -
The Aftermath 3
back to the dinosaur and dug out the bullets because they couldn't be left in the past. After Lesperance told Travis that he didn't have to make Eckles do that the men got back into the Machine to return home. They washed off and in the Machine Eckles and Travis were bickering with each other, Travis threatening to kill him. -
The Return
When the men returned home the office looked just the same as they left it but something was different. As Travis examined the room and found everything was the same he told Eckles to leave and never come back. But Eckles didn't move because he knew although everything looked the same everything was differernt, and when he looked at the sign it was spelt differently. Eckles freaked out and looked at the bottom of his shoe at the dead butterfly. Eckles freaked out again and asked the man in the.. -
The Return 2
office who won the presidential election to which the man responded, "Deutscher". The man was happy the Deutscher won and called Keith a weakling. Eckles dropped to his knees and again freaked out and asked to go back and take it back. Eckles didn't move and Travis took a deep breath, flipped his safety off of his gun, and raised his gun, and there was a sound of thunder.
