    Gold was discovered in California in 1849. People from all over the world came to takep part in the Gold Rush. Over one million Irish came to the USA, because they didn't have enough food.

    In this period, about 40 million immigrants from countries in Southern and Eastern Europe emigrated to the USA. By the 1920s, there were more than 100 different ethnic groups in America.
  • 1960s-now

    Since the 1960s, most new immigrants have come from Asia and Latin America. Spanish is now the second most spoken language in the USA.
