    Salva is finally going to school. The boys only go to school when they are over ten, and it is the rainy season. Salva and his brothers are in school and they hear gunshots, this is the start of the civil war. His village has been attacked and he now has to hide.

    Salva had to run away. He ran into a soldier and the soldier put a gun to Salva's face, Salva got very scared but nothing happened to him. Him and many others found a barn to sleep in but when he woke up everyone was gone, he was alone.

    Once Salva calmed down he looked into the horizon and found a little house. It was the home to an old woman of the Dinka tribe. She helped out Salva but then she had to leave because it was becoming the dry season. The woman didn't let Salva go with her. Now he is upset and scared until he sees more people from the Dinka tribe.

    The people from the other tribe decided to let Salva tag along. Everyday it was nonstop walking. After about a week there were many people, from other tribes too. They had all been STARVING. Once Slava and another kid from the other tribe, Bulka, had slowed down, Bulka had found a beehive. That night they were going to feast on honey

    Salva and the others were stung many times getting the honey. Salva finally felt full and that made it easier to walk. He met a child from the same tribe, named Muriel. Muriel told Salva they would have to walk to Ethiopia, another country. Salva was very nervous but kept walking. At the end of this chapter Salva heard A familiar voice call his name.

    Salva realizes that it is his uncle that had called him. He stayed near his uncle the entire time to keep him safe because the uncle had a gun. His friend Marial did the same. At the end of the chapter they had woken and Marial was gone. This examples character vs nature.

    Marial was gone. They knew that he couldn't have wandered off on his own, he was killed, by a lion. There were trails of blood. Salva was very scared but his uncle calmed him. Salva had to cross the Nile, then a desert, then he would reach Ethiopia. They also had to build the boats, being aware of where the war is.

    Salva and the others paddled for hours until they reached where the Nile's fishermen lived. They gave them food and when Salva was sucking on the sugarcane he was reminded of his family and the food they ate. Salva wondered if would ever get that again.

    Salva had to start the journey across the desert. It was scorching hot and each step felt like an hour for Salva. It was very painful and they were all tired and scared. Slava's uncle had to motivate him to keep going. At the end of the chapter they came across another group of people, who were dying.

    Salva and the others keep walking, by the end of the day, they should reach the end of the desert. Salva learns that his parents are probably dead, and when he gets to Ethiopia his uncle would leave for Sudan again, to fight in the war. They found a bird to cook and when they were almost done six armed men from the Nuer tribe robbed them and shot Salva's uncle three times.

    Salva''s uncle was buried after being shot and killed. Once Uncle was gone the rest of the group went back to not believing in Salva so they gave him no food or water. They reached the camp safely and there were thousands of people, and one, that looked like his mother.

    Salva realized that the woman was not his mother, he realized that he most likely would never see his family again. Now he had to think back about his uncle, and take it step by step.

    Salva was now 17 years old, he was still in the camp. One day armed men said ALL camps were closing. The made Salva and the others evacuate the camp... and Ethiopia.

    The soldiers were making the people cross the river by swimming. There were crocodiles and shooting. They all had to make it across alive. Salva was one of the lucky ones. He was Leaving Ethiopia, and he knew he couldn't go to Sudan because of the war, he had to go to Kenya. Salva became the leader, leading the boys to Kenya. He remembered his family and made sure to be just like them to the other boys. He lead more than 1200 out of 1500 boys to Kenya safely.

    Before Salva boarded the plane, he was given bundles of close because it was winter in NY. He took four different planes to get here and he met his new "family" he got out of the airport and realized how cold it was. He doesn't know how to survive this weather but he will learn.     Salva hadn't seen dirt roads anywhere, everything looked so different to him. He now took lessons on English to help him speak it better, he learned many new things. (2003) Six years have passed and he has now adapted to the lifestyle well. One day he got a message from a cousin that worked at an agency, they had found his father. He traveled to Sudan, and he is now looking for his father.

    Nya is an eleven year old girl who has to walk eight hours a day to reach her destination and then back.

    Nya filled her bucket with water and started to carry it back to her home on her head. She knew that going would take her longer than she came.

    Nya was eating her food, once she was done she cleaned up and started for her second trip to the pond. Although this time Nya had to bring her five year old sister along.

    Nya moved more toward the lakes for the dry season. It was ok because the fighting between the Dinka and Nuer tribe were so busy fighting for survival that they didn't fight as much. To get water from the dry lake she had to dig very, very far just to get a little water. Muddy, dirty, water. She would sit there for many hours to get some water.

    Nya got to the camp that she had been going to every year since she was born. Nya didn't mind this camp but all of a sudden her mother now did. They had to stay in a shelter with little things, and her mother was worried about her brother and father, who went off to hunt.

    Nya's sister had felt sick and complained, and now she is so sick she doesn't even have enough energy to complain. Now the family has to make a decision whether to take to a doctor, which will take days, or hope for the best recovery where they are.

    They decided to take Akeer to the doctor. After a couple of doses of medicine she was much better. The doctor told Nya's mother that the sicknesses came from the water. She told the mother that they needed to boil the water for a least 200 seconds to clean it, this worried them because they didn't always have enough water to do so. Also once Akeer started getting water with Nya daily, she wouldn't be able to wait to drink the water. This examples character vs nature.

    Two strange men came to the place where Nya and many more people stayed at during the dry season, and had something to say about the water.

    The two men had told the people of Nya's village that they know there is water in a certain spot that Nya knew like the back of her hand, and Nya knew their was no water. The men are now becoming suspicious to Nya.

    Nya didn't understand how there could be water in a dangerous place like where she was, her brother had his doubts too.

    After the excitement of the water her father went out to help the men start to build, to build a school.

    Nya didn't know what the men were doing or using, to her it looked like a giraffe, but it was actually a crane to help get water.

    The men found water, they filled bags up of water. Nya knew they wanted to stop because of leaks but their boss, Dep, one of the two men that first arrived to the village, wouldn't let them.
