    Modern blackboard dates back to the 1801, which was at the time considered quite a revolution. James Pillans, headmaster and geography teacher at the Old High School in Edinburgh, Scotland, is credited with inventing the first modern blackboard when he hung a large piece of slate on the classroom wall.

Marketed specifically to businesspeople and teachers, the overhead projector allowed users to write on a clear piece of film and project their work on a screen, such as math problems.

Other states followed, some ponying up to pay for students’ calculators.
