Two years after Vladek and Anja met, they decided to get married.

Vladek and Anja have their first child, a baby boy named Richieu.

After Anja had been depressed after giving birth to Richieu, her parents decided it would be best if she was sent to a sanitarium. Vladek being someone Anja could rely on went with her to keep her company for the three months that they stayed there.
On the way to the sanitarium, vladek and Anja see the first Nazi flag with a swastika on it. -

Vladek was trained only a few days before he went into combat. The soldiers had dug trenchs near a river, which the other side of it was occupied by Germans. Soon after Vladek was on the frontier.

Shortly after being drafted, Vladek was sent to the frontier to fight. Bullets started flying, and Vladek began shooting at a moving bush. When he hit the bush he saw a hand come up to surrender but thought he would shoot back so he kept shooting until the other man was dead.

After Vladek killed a German Soldier, he was taken prisoner of war by the Germans. He and other soldiers were given chores and tasks that required alot of work. Vladek and the other prisoners were forced to live in tents during a very cold Autumn with only their summer uniforms and a small thin blanket. Vladek tried to stay warm by bathing in the freezing river so that he could feel warm all day in comparison. Every day Vladek would write to Anja, play chess to stay busy, and do gymnastics.

The prisoners of war were given the opportunity to work on labor assignments to take the place of German workers who were called to the front. Unlike the prison camps they were staying in the labor assignments promised housing and an abundance of food for the laborers. The jobs were to move hills of dirt that were three to four yards high and Vladek and the others had to level out the ground.

After working hard on the labor assignments, one day gestapo and wehrmacht camp to the sight and gathered all of the soldiers and lined them up alphebetically to be released.

Tosha is taking care of her own daughter Bibi, her neice Lonia, and Vladek and Anja's son Richeiu. Tosha hears news that the remaining jews in her town were being sent to Auschwitz to the gas chambers. Tosha refuses to let herself or her children be sent to the gas chambers and die. Tosha always caries a vile of poison around her neck. She decides to use the poison to kill herself and the 3 children.

Vladek and Anja create haiding spaces to stay away from Auschwitz for as long as they could. Anja and Vladek hid in a mountain of shoes for some time.

When Vladek and Anja arrive at Auschwitz, they are split up and are under the impression they will never see each other again.

Vladek is reunited with Anja at Birkenau, one of the other buildings at Auschwitz, during the summer of 1944.

In Autumn 1944, Vladek sees a crowd of women going to their new housing barracks, and in that crowd of people he spots Anja. Vladek never had a happier moment at Auschwitz.

Everyone who was at Gross-Rosen were moved to Dachau. Everyone at Dachau had nothing to do but wait for their painful death. Many people were becoming very sick. After awhile everyone at Dachau was put om a trin to switzerland.

Everyone was evacuated from Auschwitz and was forced to march to Gross-Rosen in Germany.

Vladek is hiding out in a barn and is found by Americans. Vladek takes work with the Americans.

Vladek and Anja are reunited again after they both thought that they would never see each other again after they were split up at Auschwitz.
