Before Vladek met Anja, he had been seeing another girl named Lucia for a couple years. One December when Vladek traveled to his relatives, his cousin told him about Anja. After spending some time with Anja, and exchanging letters, Vladek realized that he loved Anja. He decided to stop seeing Lucia. -

Shock on the Way to the Sanitarium
Anja and Vladek pass by a town with a Nazi flag raised in the center. They pray that the "Nazi gangsters will ge thrown out of power". The war has not started yet. -
Vladek and Anja at the Sanitarium
Vladek really loves Anja, and his aid is helping her get better in the sanitarium. -
Vladek Gets Drafted to the Polish Army
He went towards the german frontier. -
Getting Imprisoned After the Battle
Vladek got sent to a prison camp where he had to endure the cold. The polish were given heated cabins. He still kept high hopes, so when a worker's needed sign was put up, he jumped at the opportunity. Although the new labor was harder, his living conditions were also much better. -
Parshas Truma
A surreal vision came to Vladek explaining that he would be free from this work camp on Parshas truma. The rabbi said this would come in 3 months. When Parshas Truma came the Jews were taken, but instead of being freed, they were moved to another prison camp to the protectorate of Germany in Poland. -
Vladek's Return to Sosnoweic
When Vladek returned to his family, he learned about the curfew, discrimination, and other dangers that now became a fact of everyday life. Vladek's textile factory was taken and an aryan manager was put in his place. -
Violence in the Streets
Vladek was going to visit Ilzecki and in the street he saw Nazis taking Jews with or without paper an killing them. Vladek safely made it to Ilzecki's house, and waited out the terror. -
Jews of Sosnoweic Relocate to the Ghetto
When Vladek and his family moved into the Ghetto, three jews were also hung for dealing goods without coupons and displayed for a week. -
Richeu is Sent Away
When Richeu is sent away, Vladek and the family thought he would be safe, but the Nazis decided they would clear out Zawiercie, so Tosha decided she would poisen herself, Richeu, and the other children. -
Most people have been sent to Auschwitz from Srodula
Vladek has connections with Miloch who is close to the Nazis, but soon, they will need to hide to avoid being sent away. He was able to hide with Anja, and a few others in a bunker. -
Vladek and Anja hide with Motonowa and Kawka
They go back an forth between these places because at one point Motonowa gets nervous about some Nazis suspecting her. After some time Kawka informs Vladek of people that will smuggle them into Hungary. -

Vladek's Luck with the Kapo
Vladek's linguistic skills aid him in getting good treatment from Kapo, the leader of his section. He get clothes that fit, better food, and things for Mandelbaum, one of his friends. The Kapo kept Vladek safe for 2 months. -
Vladek Works as a Tinman
Roof work
After the Kapo let Vladek go, he becomes a skilled tinsman worker. During this time he befriends Mancie who helps keep him in touch with Anja who is in Birkenau. -
Vladek Arrives in Birkenau
Vladek sees Anja for the first time since they were seperated. During one conversation between Anja and Vladek, a Nazi gets suspicious and gives Vladek a painful beating. -
Vladek's Third Useful Talent: Shoemaking
As a shoemaker, Vladek gets a sausage for fixing a German's shoe. He is also able to fix the Kapo's shoe, which eases tensions between her and the Kapo. -
Black Work
During this part of Vladek's expirience, he had to work the hardest and under the worst conditions. He carried heavy boulders, and dug holes. He also saw the monstrous reality of the gas chambers and crematories. -
The March from Auschwitz
Vladek and the remaining survivors marched back into the reich past the gross-rosen line because germany was losing the war. Many people were shot along the way. -
The Americans Find Vladek
Vladek is liberated, but he still has typhus and at the hospital he finds out he also has diabetes. -
Vladek and Anja Reunite in Sosnoweic
