    The Trail of TearsAs part of Andrew Jackson's Indian removal policy, the Cherokee Indians of the lands east of the MIssissippi River were forced to leave and migrate to what is now Oklahoma. Due to hunger, exhaustion, and disease, around 4,000 Cherokee out of the 15,000 marching died.

    The Trail of DeathThe Potawatomi of Indiana resisted Jackson's relocation treaty of 1836. The leader of this resistance, Chief Menominee, refused to sell his land and leave for west of the Mississippi. To deal with this resistance, John Tipton was assigned to evacuate the Indians. Suffering from a depleted supply of medicine, the Indians marched across Illinois, Mississippi, and Missouri in order to enter Kansas.
