    Hieroglyphics

    Hieroglyphics
    The Mayans found Hieroglyphics as a very helpful writing tool. They mostly used it when carved into stone, bones, painted on pots, written in books and on bark paper. As shown in the photo here is a piece of stone with Hieroglyphics carved into it.

    Polytheism
    The Mayans believed in many gods(polytheism). These gods were thought of to be nourished by blood. Sacrifice was a central part of the Mayan religion. This photo represents the TeHe God, one of the many Mayan gods.

    Pedro De Alvarado

    Pedro De Alvarado
    The explorer Pedro De Alvarado led a Spanish expedition from Mexico and invaded Guatemala. He defeated the Mayans and established Spansih rule. Alvarado also converted all of the previous natives to Roman Catholics. This is a potrait of Alvarado himself.

    Independance from Spain
    Guatemala declared Independance from Spain on the date of September 15, 1821. The date of Independance is written on a scroll in the Guatemalan flag as shown to the left.
  • Jorge Ubico Forced to Resign

    Jorge Ubico Forced to Resign
    The President, Jorge Ubico, was forced to resign by a general strike against him that started in 1944. Then they installed his friend General Juan Frederico Ponce as his succesor, which only lasted 3 months. By then the military coup overthrew the regime. Ubico then fled to New Orleans. This then left Guatemala in an economic chrisis.

    Major Earthquake
    In the year of 1976, Guatemala was hit by an earthquake right outside of Guatemala City. The earthquake had a magnitude of around 7.5. This caused about 23,000 deaths and $700 million in damage. In this photo is a picture of citizens sitting outside of a Church located in Guatemala City.

    Decline of Mayan Civilization
    Due to a two-hundred year long drought, the Mayan Civilization slowly started to decline. Many were dying from thirst and famine. This photo demonstrates the civilization "collapsing."

    Creating Buildings
    The eight hundreds were the building years of the Mayans. They started to create large cities containing temple-pyramids, palaces, ball courts and community houses. Here in this photograph is a palace where higher classed citizens were to live.
