    The election was between the Republicans nominee, Abraham Lincoln, Constitutional Union Party nominee, John Bell, and the Democrats two nominees, Stephen Douglas, and John Breckinridge. Lincoln won the election without any southern votes and with the entire North backing him. His victory put fear in the south, who after Lincolns victory they seceded from the Union.

    President of the Confederacy from February 18, 1861- May 15, 1865. He was a former Secretary of State under President Pierce. He was sworn in on February 18, 1861 in Montgomery, Alabama.
  • Fort Sumter

    Charleston, South Carolina, the first battle of the Civil War. Confederate troops attacked Union troops stationed her after the Confederacy seceded. The Union troops stationed here surrendered on the 13th to the Confederate troops.

    Winfield Scott was a Union General-in-chief who was too old and heavy to go directly into battle. He supported a plan that would bring the end of the war with the Union winning.     Union troops were close to victory, when Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson counterattacked with Confederate reinforcements. The Union troops retreated back to Washington D.C. A majoe south victory that showed that they were deadly.

    The most well known Confederate General after Robert E. Lee. Stole the victory from the Union in a counterattack at the first battle of Bull Run. Was shot by friendly fire and died of Pneumonia at the Battle of Chancorville

    Most important Naval Battle in the Civil War. March 8-9, 1862 in Hamptons Road, Virginia. The south attempted to break the blockade and a huge naval battle took place. The result was that the south didn't break the blockade and the battle received worldwide attention.
  • Ulysses S. Grant

    Ulysses S. Grant
    April 6-7, 1862, in Hardin County, Tennessee. Lincoln promoted him th LT. Gen., and gave him command of all Union forces. He would eventually become the a18th president of the US. Battle of Shiloh(a major battle), Union troops defended Owl creek from Confederate troops, who drove them back. Reinforcements for the Union arrived and helped defeat the Confederate army and they retreated.
  • George McClellan

    George McClellan
    Head general for Union forces for the begininng of the war. He fought Lee in the Seven Days Battles in Virginia. Lasted from June 25-July 1, 1862, and the Confederacy won.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Battle of Antietam
    Sepetember 17-18, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland. It was the first major battle to take place on Union soil, and the bloodiest single day battle in US history. McClellan defeated Lee and athough the battle was tactically inconclusive, it had unique significance as enough of a victory to give President Abraham Lincoln the confidence to announce his Emancipation Proclamation, which discouraged the British and French governments from potential plans for recognition of the Confederacy.

    Battle of Fredericksburg
    December 11-15, 1862, Fredericksburg, Virginia. Union General Ambrose Burnside assaulted Federicksburg, Virginia, with the hope of capturing the city and quickly moving on to Richmond. However Lee and his forces were able to repulse multiple attacks and send Burnside and his troops retreating with heavy casaulties.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    Abraham Lincoln created an executive order during the war, that freed all slaves in the US. The souths slaves were not free till Union troops liberated them. Lincoln announced on Sep. 22nd, 1862, that he would create this proclamation, and that it go into effect on the 1st day of the year 1863. It was signed and issued that day.

    Was head military commander of the Confederacy. Was part of the Union military, until Virginia declared their seperation, so Lee followed his home state. He gained a lot of victories like in the Battle of Chancorsville. Lasted until May, 6, 1863
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    Battle of Vicksburg
    May 18-July 4, Vicksburg, Mississippi. Grant was head of Union forces who drove the Confrederate army to Vicksburg. Grant had to siege the city for nearly a month, until the Confederate army surrendered. The Battles at Vicksburg and Gettysburg ultimately turned the tide of the war.

    July 1-3, 1863, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The turning point of the Civil War for the Union forces. There were heavy loses on both sides, as the Union were holding their lines. On the third day, Confederate forces charged the Union at Pickett's Charge, and they were defeated. Out of all the battles in the Civil War, Gettysburg was the one with the most casualties on both sides.

    Gettysburg Address
    Lincoln gave a speech in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, four months after the victory of Union forces here. Lincoln spoke of freedom and equality for all people of the United States, and its continuation. It also honored those who fought and died at Gettysburg, who were fighting for freedom and equality.

    Sherman and Grant wanted to end the war by crushing Confederacy economy, spirit, and military. While Sherman moved south, he would use scorched earth tactics, by using or destroying anything of use to the south. The march lasted from Nov. 15-Dec. 20, 1864
  • Appomattox Court House

    Appomattox Court House, Virginia. One of the final battles of the Civil War. Lee and his forces attacked Union forces under Grants command, with the hope of defeating them to regroup with other Confederate forces, but surrendered to the Union.
  • Lincoln's Assassination

    Lincoln's Assassination
    Ford's Theatre, Washington D.C. A plot to assassinate Lincoln, VP Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State William H. Seward, was to eliminate the leaderships of the Union, with the hope of the Confederacy to keep fighting even after Lee's surrender.
