    Abraham Lincoln vs. John C. Breckinridge vs. Stephen A. Douglas.Abraham Lincoln elected as first Republican president. In his inaugeral adress Licoln assured the southerners that he would not interfere with slavery but any distribution of slaves would not be permitted.

    Davis elected as president of the Confederate States of America.In charge of confederate war plans. Davis' diplomatic efforts gained little respect from foreign countries, paid little attention to south's economy, and printed an obsessive amount of paper money to cover for war expenses.

    Charleston North Carolina. South held position in fort. Lincoln gives South Carolina the choice to open fire, in which they do. Lincoln uses power of executive branch: called for war volunteers, spending money for war, suspending privilege of the writ of habeas corpus.

    Robert E. Lee vs Ambrose E. Burnside Union army of the Potomac. Burnside's plan was to get to confederate capital Richmond before Lee's army could stop him.Eventually the union army arrived at city and waged war against the confederates.

    Issued by Abraham Lincoln. This document proclaimed the freedom of many slaves. In it, Lincoln adresses the south that he would not interfere with slavery and plantations, but the distribution of slaves among non slave owners and slave owners was to not be permitted.

    Ulysses S. Grant led battle against John C. Pemberton in the city of Vicksburg. Grant defeated the confederate army and took control of the city. The capturing of Vicksburg cut off confederate communication with the Trans-Mississippi Department wich was a major military and naval operations west of the Mississippi River.

    Battle of Gettysburg- Lee led 3day battle against the north and intended to destroy the union army.He intended to move summer campaign from northern Virginia and influence northern politicians to give up prosecution of the war.

    Turning point of the war. Lee led his army against George G. Meade.His goal was to destroy the union army. Union army was equipped with union rifle and artillery which proved effective against Lee's army. Lee retreated in defeat back to Virginia. This gave an opportunity to Abraham Lincoln to deliver his Gettysburg address.

    Ulysses S. Grant led union assault on Petersburg. His assault was proven unsuccessful so he built trenches around petersburg to cut off confederate supplies.Petersburg at the time was a supply center to Richmond, Virginia and Lee's confederate army.

    Began Nov. 15, Sherman's troops left the city of Atlanta, Georgia and ended on Dec. 21 with capture of the port of Savannah. This march damaged the infrastructure, industry, and civilian property.

    This was the final engagement in the Civil War between Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. The Union was victorious in this battle, which ended with the surrender of Lee to Grant which brought an end to the great Civil War.
