    Election of 1860
    Was a competition between Abraham Lincoln & John C. Breckinridge. Republicans Chose Abe as their Candidate --who could carry the key midwestern states. The Southern Democrats chose Breckinridge -- who called for the extension of slavery in the Terr. & Annexation of cuba where slavery could flourish. The victory of the Republicans brought the South to come together & try to secede from the union.

    Jefferson Davis
    was selected provisional president of the confederate states. He didn't have many strategies to beat the union. When captured in 1865 he was charged with treason, and taken out of office. He was replaced by general Robert E. Lee.

    General for the Confederate states during the civil war. at the beginning was invited by lincon to take command of the union army, but Lee refused. he decided to fight with his people, from the south. Throughout his career Lee won many battles such as: battle of fredericksburg, 2nd battle of bull run etc.

    Fort Sumter, in the harbor of Charleston VA, was shut off from supplies and reinforcements from Southern control. Lincoln anounced he would send supplies and if the south would not allow him he would send troops. The south refused & thus began the war.

    Major general for the Union during the Civil War, organized the Army of the potomac. although Famous His armies had many retreats from Robert E Lee's army. McClellan eventually lost the trust of Abraham Lincoln and was discarded as commander in chief.

    proposed by winfield Scott; a blockade of southern ports, and the mississippi river to split the south in two and make it easier to seize them. the image of the blockade looked like an anaconda "suffocating its victim"...the name stuck and soon became popular.

Was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Northern soil. it was the bloodiest single day battle. the union assaulted the sunken road and pierced the confederacy, although Maj Gen Ap Hill devised a surprise counter attack and drove Burnside away, ending the battle.

    Joined the union war effot and trained new regiments. he fought many battles and got the reputation as an agressive general. in 1863 he captured vicksburg and took control of the mississippi river & split the confederacy. 1864-65 he was ranked lit. gen. & took charge of all union armies. he faced off Lee in many battles and last at appomattox which ended the civil war.

Burnside's plan was to cross the rappahannock river befro lee's army could.although problems came to burnside and he was unable to reach before lee. on Dec. 15 burnside withdrew his army .

    confederate general, most well known after Robert E. Lee. He served as a corps commander in the army of north Virginia. In the first battle of bull run he received his nickname (stonewall). & lead through the second battle of Manassas, Antietam, and Fredericksburg.

    Gen Ulysses S. Grant drove his army of tennesse to the mississippi river & drove the confederates out. Grant decided to besiege the city and after 40 days garrison surrendered on july 4.
