  • Prohibition

    During the war the sale of liquor was banned because the grain was needed for the soldiers. This actualy had quite a few social benifits. Crime rate dropped as did arrests for being drunk. Morepoeple actually took cheques home and fewer work days were missed.
    Eventually the government realized how much money they were losing in taxes. (not to mention the fact that liquor was sold despite the law) Canadian provinces slowly dropped prohibition throughout the 1920's

  • Spanish Flu

    Spanish FluAs soldiers returned from the first world war, they carried unknowingly carried the spanish influenza back with them. The disease made people weak and often caused them to get pneunomia as well. Since this was before penicillin and other medications,many people died from it.
    In attempt to stop the spread of the spanish influenza, many public buildings such as schools, churchs and theaters closed down. Quarentines were set up as well. The flu killed only about 10000 people less than the war.
  • Winnipeg General Strike

    Many people wanted inproved living and working conditions. On may 1st they voted to go on strike. They wanted three things. Decent waged (85 cents an hour), an eight hour day, the right to bargin collectively for better working conditions. On May 15th 30000 workers walked away from their jobs. Stress built as things closed and on june 21st violence erupted. They called it bloody Saturday
  • Leauge of Indians

    After the war Aboriginal veterans would have the right to vote... if they gave up their aboriginal status. To them, it was like losing their identity. They beilived they had the right to vote without giving up their statuses. in the 1920s-1930s the worked hard for better health,education, more financial aid, control over reserve lands an the right to hunt,fish and trap without the government interfering.
  • Group of Seven

    The group of seven consisted of : Lawren Harris,Franklin Carmicheal,Frank Johnston,Arthur Lismer and Fred Varley. A.Y. Jackson became the seventh when contacted by J.E.H. MacDonald who had introduced them all. Then A.J. Casson came to join in 1926 and Frank Johnston. They loved showing the beauty of Canada in their pictures, They used paint with bright vivid think strokes attempting to capturenthe vitality and ruggedness of the land.
    Today people pay A LOT of money for their art
  • Insulin

    Types of InsulinFrederick Banting and Insulin
    FrederickBanting had a small medical practice, but it wasn'tall that busy. He though a lot about diabetis and how they could not take to much sugar and starch. They were missing a hormone called insulin. Banting thought that maybe, if he could isolate it, he could inject it into patients
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    This banned all chinese except for merchants students and diplomats from entering Canada. From 1923-1947 only eight chinese people were let in. This date was called humiliation day to Chinese Canadians. They also limited the number of Japanese coming in to 150 because people moved to the city instead of farms for work which increased the unemployment rate.
  • Royal Canadian Air Force

    The government belived that the military planes could be used for peaceful purposes. The Early RCAF pilots watched for forest fires, smuggling and checked up on fishing boats. In 1927 they started flying mail to remote parts of Canada.
    In the middle of winter in 1929 there was an outbreak of diptheria. Wilfred May took a co-pilot and flew the medication there. Thus proving military planes can be used for peace in Canada
  • The Persons Case

    Women were not always counted as `persons` in the sense of the term it had been used in. Five women went into the supreme court to get their rights. It was the "Famous 5" (Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney and Nellie McClung) who really got womens independance in trade, official functions and university
  • Black Tuesday

    On Tuesday, October 29, 1929, the stock market crashed. On this day, referred to as Black Tuesday, everyone who had put major investments in to the stock market tried to pull their money out all at the same time. Since everyone was withdrawling, the stock prices all decreased dramatically and stayed low or at least a month.
  • Five Cent Speech

    William Lyon Mackenzie King gave a speech we know as the five cent speech.The intention was to tell the people that the provinces are helping the great depression and Black Tuesday. He said "would not give them a five-cent piece to those alleged unemployment purposes" and "it is the provinces' responsibility." After this speech was given, R.B. Bennett became the new prime minister.
  • Prime Minister: R.B. Bennett

    R.B. Bennet was the prime minister during the great depression amd also a multi millionaire and Lawyer. He was the 11 Prime inister and he represented the conservative party. He was elceted to lead Canada through the hard times of the great depression with his business ways. His main plan was to expand the trading with th British Empire and add Tarrifs (taxes) to out ofcountry goods.
  • The Statue of Westminister

    Canada was made completely self governing only bound by laws it passed on its own, meaning britain could no longer make laws for them. They weren't fully independant though two areas remained, The Judical Committeenof the Privy Council in Britain and the British North American could not be agreed upon, so the Britains held this until the time the Canadians decided on the powers that the prvincial and federal governments had.
  • On to Ottawa Trek

    The 'On to Ottawa Trek was on o the highlights of the great deppression starting in 1929 until 1939.in 1935 hundreds of single unemployed men hopped freight trains to Ottawa demanding work, wages and an end to the government releif camps
  • S.S. Saint Louis

    On this ship there were over nine hundred Jewish people all fleeing Germany from awful events the previous November had held. Each one made it into Cuba from this ship. The S.S. Saint Louis was one of the last ships to leave Germany before the War went through Europe.
