    The Homestead Act of 1862 gave 160 free acres of land to any settler who paid a filing fee and lived there for five years.It brought farmers to the plains. If they settled on it it gave them ownership because they settled on the land.
  • Fetterman Massacre

    Fetterman Massacre
    Fetterman Massacre was the bloodiest battle. Army troops were guarding a fort on the Bozeman Trail. This trail was used by prospecters to try and get to gold. Crazy Horse was the sioux military leader, and he was the decoy to bring the troops into a deadly trap. The Native American's won this battle.
  • Treaty of Fort Laramie

    Treaty of Fort Laramie
    A conference was held at Fort Laramie. It was held to sign a treaty. This treaty was to bring peace between the indian tribe the sioux and the whites.The Sioux agreed to make there homes within the Black Hills Reservation. This was in the Dakota Territory. The treaty stated that the sioux had the land set aside for them to live on and use. This was taken back by George Custer who led people into this territory for gold.

    The Discovery of 1874 happend because the Treaty of Laramie was broken by General George A. Custer. He led many people for an expedition to look for gold. Prospectors took over the entire area. The Sioux prostested it and tried to by there land back.The United States army was ordered to move the Sioux to a different area and a different reservation.

    Battle of Little Big Horn
    General George Custer attacked Native Americans. But he didn't know that it was going to be as hard as it was to try and beat them.Custer went up against the Sioux, and the Cheyenne. Together the Sioux and the Cheyenne had thousands vs. Custers 250 men. the Native American's came out on top. It shocked everyone when they heard of the defeat by the Native Americans.

    The Ghost dance allowed the Sioux to express thir culture that was being destroyed.As the dance made its way throught the reservation, reservstion officials got scared and took the dance away from the Sioux. Police thought that Sitting Bull was the leader of the dance and movement, so they arrested him for it.
  • Wounded knee

    After Sitting Bulls death, the Lakota Sioux all gathered at a creek called Wounded Knee. Wounded knee is in southwestern South Dakota. The American Army found the Sioux and took all there weapons from them. No one ever found out how the battle started. But it did, and all because of a pistol shot. Wounded knee marked the last confict between Native Americans and White people.
