    Homestead Act of 1862
    Gave 160 free acres of land to a settler who paid a filing fee and lived on the land for five years. It lured thousands of new settlers. This happened in the Great Plains.
  • Fetterman Massacre

    Fetterman Massacre
    A sioux military leader, Crazy Horse, acted as a decoy and lured U.S troops into a deadly trap. Hundreds of warriors were waiting, and ambushed the soldiers. The sioux won the battle.
  • Treaty of Fort Laramie

    Treaty of Fort Laramie
    The Sioux could live in the Black Hills if they promised not to attack Americans.
  • 1874 Discovery

    1874 Discovery
    Custer led an army expedition to check on the rumors and confirmed that there was gold. Prospectors from all over came into the area.
  • Battle of Little Bighorn

    Battle of Little Bighorn
    Sitting Bull gathered Sioux and Cheyenne warriors along the Little Bighorn river in Montana. Crazy Horse and his forces joined them. The U.S. Army, lead by George Custer, was ordered to round up the warriors and move them to reservations. They attacked the warriors and under estimated their strength. The U.S was out numbered and the Native Americans defeate them.
  • Ghost Dance

    Ghost Dance
    A method of dancing the Sioux used to express their culture. Reservation officials became alarmed and decided to ban the dance. Police arrested Sitting Bull becuase the thought that he was the reason of the movement. During a scuffle, Sitting Bull was shot.
  • Wounded Knee

    Wounded Knee
    A creek where several hundred Lakota Sioux fled to after Sitting Bull's death. Nobody knows how the fighting started. More than 200 Sioux and 25 soldiers were killed. This battle marked the last battle between the U.S. and the Native Americans.
