    Greek Period
    600-146 BCE : In the Greek times flowers were not comonly used for decoration but mostly to symbolize and give honor to to their Gods and Heros. Instead of arranging flowers in vases or boquets, they would make them into wreaths worn by all Greeks during big events and also scatter them across the floor.

    Middle Ages

    Middle Ages
    476- 1450 AD : Not much is known about the use of flowers in the Middle Ages. But, we do do know that flowers where commonly grown and cultivated. Flowers where used to freshen air, and now made into arrangements in Chinese porcelain containers.

    Baroque
    14th Century: In this era, flowers started to become affordable to pretty much anyone. Arangements were bcoming more creative and expressive and often used more curved lines and flowers that over flowed its container. A popular arrangement at the time was the Hogarth curve shown in the Event picture.

    Dutch-Flemish

    Dutch-Flemish
    14th Century: Many arrangements in this era had a variety of different flowers in one cantainer that was much shorter than the arrangement itself. They were the first to combine mass and line arrangement to make line-mass designs.

    Renaissance

    Renaissance
    14th Century Italy:The renaissance was filled with loads of art that represented much history. This era was also full of bright colors and massive flower arrangements. Large, tall,pyramidal, & symetrical arrangements with all of the blossoms visible seemed to be popular at the time.Arrangements were also commonly put in large metal urns.

    17th and 18th Century: The arrangements in the French period- also known as "The Grand Era"- were all about design, refinement, and elegance, and most of them had a profound feminine touch. This era began the feeling of flowers being "girly"
  • English-Georgian

    English-Georgian
    18th Century: Named for King George, this period was common for the creatuion of the "Tussy Mussy" and the "Nosegay". They are used to ssafeguard people from illness and smell. The picture to the left is of a Tussymussy.
  • Victorian

    Victorian
    1837-1901 AD: Named for Queen Victoria, this era seemed very weak. The arrangements often had poor designs, made of artificial flowers, and were asymetrical with no focal point. But out of this lack of beauty came something great, floral design school. Most "cultured girls" attended this school where they learned some of the 1st rules on flower arranging.
  • Modern America

    Modern America
    1917- present: Flower arrangements have changed very little. But, flower arranging now really takes an individual expression and a creative mind. One thing that became popular in this era was corsages. (shown in picture)
