The Loan Service 2013 was temporarily suspended due to student feedback. The service was reviewed and re-launched on 4th February 2013.

The Bar, together with the International Relations Club, organized the first excursion trip for international exchange students to visit Universal Studios Singapore. The objectives of the event include engaging the international students to foster friendships and to facilitate cultural exchange.

The Bar revealed its signature event of the year, Law Week 2013, together with the recruitment drive for its organising committee. The anniversary event will feature welfare drives, appreciation ceremonies, a freshmen pageant, a fashion show, etc.

The Finance Director of The Bar confirmed its S$4,254.17 donation to MCYC Community Services Society from proceeds obtained from Law Musical 2012.

The President of The Bar regretfully announced the subsumption of the executive committee of the SMU Pro Bono Club under the SMU Pro Bono Centre to ‘streamline the processes’ due to the founding of the Centre.

The Public Relations Department of The Bar renewed and strengthened ties with Rajah & Tann LLP. The firm kindly agreed to provide generous event sponsorships and to conduct dialogue sessions, moot competitions and academic workshops to benefit SMU law students.

Following the success of the first excursion trip, The Bar and the International Relations Club organised a follow-up event that included a night walk around the city’s landmarks and a dinner with faculty members at Kopitiam.

The Pro-Acad Department of The Bar facilitated the Moratorium 2013 voting exercise with NUS Law Club and organized an information session on 15th March 2013. SMU students voted 64.3% against the moratorium while NUS students voted 67.1% for the moratorium. With only 57.8% of the combined cohort voting for the moratorium, the moratorium failed.

Over the exams period, The Bar Student Loan Service was extended to include the loan of fans due to the lack of air-conditioning and ventilation in group study rooms after office hours and during weekends.

The Bar revolutionised welfare drives with a ‘carnival’ concept – bringing in a wide variety of food, Swissbake discounts and provided a bistro-style setting at the SOA/SOL benches.

The SMU Law Soccer Team made history by defeating the NUS Law Team 3-2, and secured its first ever victory against NUS. It was also the first time the team comprised students from graduating seniors, a JD student, an exchange student, alumnus and a strong injection of freshmen.

With the PSI of the haze situation reaching record-breaking levels, contingency plans were made to ensure the safety of all students at the upcoming summer events. The Bar also collaborated with other school constituent bodies to purchase up to 40 N95 masks to be distributed to the elderly cleaners and security guards of the schools.

The President of The Bar was invited as one of the three panelists at the OCS Appreciation Tea. He shared with SMU's major corporate partners about students' needs and expectations towards the job market, and advised on effective ways to provide career guidance to students.

This initiative aims to curb inflationary pressures from inaccurate estimation of demand and undue reference to past year bids.

The Pro-Acad Department submitted preliminary research and feedback to the Associate Dean (Teaching and Curriculum) on the review of the FFL course and instructor. A focus group was subsequently set up to provide further insights and recommendations to improve the way FFL is taught.

The SMU Law Outreach Club was established by The Bar and the Exco of the old Pro Bono Club. The Law Outreach Club aims to contribute to the community in aspects beyond pro bono, and will help to facilitate activities such as the MOE Moot Parliament Programme and the NUS-SMU “In Session” Dialogue Series, among others. The Club welcomes students to come forth with any ideas and initiatives of service to the community and will strive to help make it happen.

The Bar launched the weekly Meet-the-People Sessions every Friday, 1600 hrs - 1730 hrs at the Law Soc Room (SOL GSR 3.2) for students to have a face-to-face chat with members of The Bar and the Deanery.

The Vice President of The Bar presented findings and follow-up actions on the responses provided by 162 students during the mid-term survey. The Bar also reacted to feedback and reviewed the loan service list to better cater to the needs of the students.

The Bar held an EGM to amend the constitution. A total of 41 students attended the EGM and a total of 98 constitutional amendments were made.

Law Week 2013 Day 1: Law Week 2013 started off with a splash as The Bar handled out welfare in the form of customized thumbdrives, memo pads, foolscap sheets and attractive vouchers. The highly anticipated T-shirt was also on sale. Freshmen and exchange students were also provided with specially made nametents.

Law Week 2013 Day 2: As we celebrate our successes, The Bar has dedicated the day to provide a welfare buffet for the cleaners and security guards of SMU. The appreciation event serves to thank them for their work and friendliness while they provide our students with a clean and safe learning environment everyday.

Law Week 2013 Day 3: The Bar announced the list of professors that students have nominated as the most witty, inspirational and well dressed. The Bar also prepared specially designed mugs to give out to our professors and law librarians to show them some love during this celebratory week.

Law Week 2013 Day 4: The Bar announced the list of winners for the inaugural School of Law Student Life Awards. These students have demonstrated strong support for school activities and/or made significant contributions to student life, thereby enhancing the holistic education experience amongst the SMU Law community.

Law Week 2013 Finale: To round up the week of festivities, the finale event - Law Fashion Show: Till Nightfall - promises to feature The Bar's very first fashion show, the annual freshmen pageant and musical performances from our very own students.

The Marketing Department of The Bar revealed the newly designed nametent for law students to order and purchase. Also, following the overwhelming response for the new law school T-shirt, a new batch of orders was made to curb the high demand.

The Bar invited 8 recruitment partners from the top 5 law firms in Singapore to conduct the inaugural Training Contracts Seminar. This seminar aims to provide first-hand information and advice to students that are in the midst of applying for their training contracts. The event was fully-subscribed on the first day of registration.

The Pro-Acad Department launched the Pro-Acad Portal of the SMU Law Society website, providing a one-stop destination for all things related to professional and academic development, including course requirements, internships, exchange programmes as well as graduation.

The Bar concluded the events calendar with a comprehensive summary of the highlights of the year. These included the newly added Valentine's Day celebrations and Law Week 2013.

The Bar organised its annual R&T Dialogue and Networking Session with a record 80 student signups. The programme began with a short introduction of Rajah & Tann LLP, followed by small group discussions where participants rotated around different groups of lawyers (representing various practice areas) for closer interaction.

The Bar and the International Relations Club organised the second installation of the International Exchange Student Excursion Trip and the students visited Universal Studios Singapore at its annual Halloween Horrors Night.

To equip students with better knowledge of the various practice areas and career paths, the 6th Management Committee of The Bar piloted, together with the Dato' Kho Hui Meng Career Centre, Insights, a legal career lecture series focusing on exposing law students to niche practice areas.
