    -triggered the start of the civil war -located in Charleston,SC
  • jefferson davis became president of the confederate states of america

    • he resigned from the U.S. Senate, he was selected provisional President of the Confederate States of America; he was elected without opposition to a six-year term that November -,Davis took charge of the Confederate war plans but was unable to find a strategy to stop the larger, more powerful and better organized Union.
  • Battle of Antietam

    • The Battle of Antietam also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, particularly in the South, fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam Creek -it saws part of the Maryland Campaign, was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Northern soil.
  • emancipation proclamation

    -stated that slaves in those states or parts of states still in rebellion as of January 1, 1863, would be declared free. -the Emancipation Proclamation was limited in many ways. It applied only to states that had seceded from the Union, leaving slavery untouched in the loyal border states.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    -Vicksburg was one of the last assaults by the Union army on the Confederate Army. -Vicksburg, a beautiful city in Warren County, on the banks of Mississippi was the grand finale of the 2 year effort by the Union Army to gain control over the areas around the river
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    -it was by the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania -it was the battle with the largest number of casualties
  • shermans march on atlanta

    -Sherman interpreted his orders as allowing him to concentrate on the capture of Atlanta -While his attitude did allow him to capture the city with suffering heavily losses, it did mean that Johnston’s army survived and had to be defeated elsewhere
  • 13th amendment

    -The 13th Amendment to the Constitution declared that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude...shall exist within the United States.
    -the 13th Amendment was passed by the Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified by the states on December 6, 1865.
  • confederate surrender at appomatox

    • 1,500 Union soldiers who had been taken prisoner were returned.
    -Gen. Robert E. Lee did not stay to witness the surrender of arms to the Union officers. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee had ridden away with the majority of his cavalry because he refused to have anything to do with the surrender.
  • Assassination of Abe Lincoln

  • john wilkes booth captured

    -Booth's body is carried up the Potomac and buried beneath the floor of the penitentiary in Washington, DC. Sergeant Corbett is arrested and briefly
    -David Herold stands trial with three other conspirators. All four are found guilty and all including Mrs. Surratt, owner of the tavern where Booth stopped, are hanged on July 7, 1865.

    -It did not guarantee blacks the right to hold office, which many congressmen felt should be included
    -It did not offer a blanket guarantee of the right to vote because many Radical Republicans feared that would void the disenfranchisement of ex-Confederates.
