  • 1900s

    In the early 1900ths skateboards were like scooters. They had roller skates which were attached to a 2by4. Sometimes the wood had a milk crate nailed to it. Later kids started to be able to move more easily because they made changes to the device that holds the wheels.

    In 1959 the first roller derby skateboard was made. Also people started to sidewalk surf. At this time surfing also began to be really popular.

    In the 1960 there were a lot of surfers that also skateboarded. The first professional skateboards were designed by Makaha.

  • 1962-1965

    Between 1962 and 1965 fifty million skateboards were sold. Then suddenly the sail of skateboards crashed. The reason for this was because the products being sold were of low quality and also Because there were too many skateboards and many many people were upset because of reckless riders. People were also worried about safety when there were a few skateboarding deaths.

    In 1970 Frank Nasworthy developed a urethaen. These were very popular and held the road well.

    In 1973 skateboarding became very popular again.

    In 1976 the first outdoor skateboard park was built. Then all over North America hundreds of skate parks were built.
  • vertical moves

    In 1978 skaters started to make vertical moves. punk and new wave became part of skateboard culture. Images of skulls were created on skateboards. Pool skating were also popular and skaters did aerials. skateboarding crashed again at the end of 1980. There were still some hardcore skateboarders though.
  • skaters earning tenths of thousandths of dollars a month

    Between the mid and late 1980s pro skaters were earning tenths of thousandths of dollars a month and skateboard shoes and skateboard clothes became really popular. Also at the end of the 1980s some pro skaters started their own skateboard companies. At this time the world of skateboarding changed when boarders began to focus on ollies and technical tricks.

    In 1995 ESPN 2 showed extreme games. At the end of the 1990s street stile was most popular and there were many manufacturers and people who sold skateboards. At this time long boarding and down hill skateboarding became very popular.
